Queer True Story “Eismayer” Gets Theatrical and Home Video Release This October!
Inspired by a true story, the queer drama titled Eismayer will see a theatrical release come October 6, 2023, followed by a DVD and Digital release on October 10, 2023.
Announced by Dark Star Pictures, Eismayer has been described as a queer coming-of-age love story with a modern military backdrop. Inspired by true events, the film follows the journey of the lead character Sergeant Eismayer who grapples with maintaining a strict macho persona in front of his army peers and hiding his homosexuality.
Eismayer has seen a lot of success during the film festival circuit, having played at Venice (winner Critic’s Week), Palm Spring IFF, Dallas IFF, Frameline, and more. Here’s to hoping the general audience also welcomes it when it’s released in October.
The premise deals with a closeted Eismayer (Gerhard Liebmann), considered the toughest training officer in the Austrian Armed Forces, being faced with an openly gay recruit named Mario Falak (Luka Dimic). Mario challenges Eismayer’s strict protocols and our titular character soon starts falling in love with the young man. However, challenges abound as Eismayer is married to a woman and has a son. And he just can’t come out as queer while working for the army, right?
Here’s the trailer!
Director and writer David Wagner got to know about Eismayer’s story after coming across an article about him in an Austrian newspaper back in 2014. The story captivated Wagner, who was studying directing at the Hamburg Media School. Wagner turned the story into a screenplay for a feature film as part of his course, and now the world can experience said film soon enough.
The movie explores themes of toxic masculinity, self-discovery, assumed sexuality, living your truth, and more. Wagner interviewed Eismayer, Falak, and other army personnel during the research process to create layered characters.
While I wasn’t interested in watching yet another queer movie with a closeted lead, the project managed to attract my attention as I got to learn more about it. I was relieved to learn that the true story that inspired this film has a happy ending. And while you should expect Eismayer to have a bunch of relationship drama, I’m here for it delivering a satisfying finale.
