Yeah, after viewing the trailer, I’m very interested in watching Queens of the Dead on October 24, 2025. The upcoming zombie survival comedy features a bunch of queer folks working together to face the zombie apocalypse.

There’s no shortage of zombie flicks out there. But with most of them focusing on the horror elements without featuring any queer characters, it’s always nice to see a different project enter the market to shake things up. Queens of the Dead doesn’t just include queer characters, but they are the driving force of the narrative. Not only that, but the film is by Tina Romero. And if the last name rings a bell, well, duh! She’s the daughter of the iconic George A. Romero.

From the trailer, the story has two survivor groups for viewers to follow. DJ & party-promoter Dre (Katy O’Brian) is working to ensure people have an awesome time at a warehouse party. In the meantime, Dre’s wife Lizzy (Riki Lindhome) is busy being a nurse at the hospital. Everything seems to be going as usual until a zombified Drag Queen enters the warehouse and bites an unsuspecting guest.

While a majority of the partygoers exit the warehouse after the incident, apparantly, outside in the open isn’t really safe. The news reporters announce that Manhattan is being attacked by a horde of zombies, leading to Dre’s group fending off the undead while sheltering inside the warehouse, and Lizzy needing to escape the hospital to reunite with her spouse.

The cast also includes Jaquel Spivey as performer Sam, Margaret Cho as Pops, Jack Haven as Kelsey, Cheyenne Jackson as Jimmy, Shaunette Renée Wilson as Tiger, Eve Lindley as Jane, Karan Brar as Officer Trayvis, Nina West, Tomas Matos, Quincy Dunn-Baker, Becca Blackwell, and Dominique Jackson. Yes, to a queer-centric horror comedy movie making the effort to cast a bunch of actual queer talent in front of the camera.

Along with directing, Tina Romero co-wrote the script with Erin Judge. I doubt the characters will be tasked with finding a cure to the zombie infection. So, the narrative will likely be contained and spend more time on character development. Also, if that’s the case, I think the movie will end in a way that will leave the door open for a potential sequel or two. And I’m here for that!

Queens of the Dead got a world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 7, 2025, winning the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.

It’s been making the festival rounds, with a screening coming up during LA’s Beyond Fest on October 5, 2025, and NYC’s Newfest on October 18, 2025. The movie will also be shown in the non-competitive section ‘Freestyle’ of the 20th Rome Film Festival sometime in October 2025.

Take note that Queens of the Dead will get a theatrical debut on October 24, 2025, via IFC and Shudder (both co-financed the project). Romero’s ready to offer a fun time this Halloween!
