Sci-Fi Graphic Novel “Magda, Intergalactic Chef: The Big Tournament” Volume 1 Gets April Release!

Graphic novel Magda, Intergalactic Chef: The Big Tournament Volume 1 is all ready to take readers on a sci-fi journey filled with action, intrigue, climate fiction, and fine dining come April 1, 2025.

From writer Nicolas Wouters and artist Mathilde Van Gheluwe, the upcoming volume 1 of Magda, Intergalactic Chef: The Big Tournament is being marketed as a perfect read for those who “love comics, cooking, and food.” The story focuses on 12-year-old Magda as she competes in a famous intergalactic cooking tournament. It’s a huge opportunity for her. However, things become darker for our young lead when she discovers an interstellar conspiracy meant to destroy her home planet.

According to the press release I received, apparantly (and I could be wrong), the book includes “wildly creative recipes” for a number of vegetarian dishes. So, yes, to this sci-fi graphic novel also, kind of, being a real-life cookbook.

The title will be released on April 1, 2025, by Graphic Universe, an imprint of Lerner Publishing Group.

Talking more about Magda, our heroine is from a small moon, Azuki, that houses a whole lot of biodiversity. Magda has a knack for coming up with unique and delicious dishes. Her talent lands her a spot in the famous tournament. The prize is receiving the world-healing Nectar. The conspiracy she stumbles upon has to do with the competition being rigged and the Imperium interested in destroying Magda’s homeworld as well as other planets for some reason.

Wouters shared that this was the type of story he’s always dreamed of writing. He added, “Combining Japanese ‘shonen’ codes with science fiction and crazy cooking fights was a lot of fun, as well as following all these unique characters.”

Mathilde Van Gheluwe said that building the fictional world from Wouters’ imagination was challenging but also a great adventure to undertake. “I had such pleasure drawing each flower, bug, cloud and star. I hope you will have as much fun discovering Magda’s wild universe — literally!”

Sean Tulien, the Lerner Editorial Director, described the book as “climate fiction meets Great British Baking Show meets dystopian sci-fi.”

Two more volumes in the series are coming. So, that is a valid greenlight to check out a new title without worrying about the story ending on a cliffhanger.
