“Skull Island: The Animated Series” Continues In “Return to Skull Island” Comic Book This June

Fans of Skull Island: The Animated Series will soon get to read a story set in that particular universe. Titan Comics and Legendary Comics will be releasing Return to Skull Island issue 1 come June 4, 2025.
The upcoming debut issue of Return to Skull Island will feature a cover by artist Inhyuk Lee. The issue will be solicited in the April edition of Diamond PREVIEWS. You can also pre-order the comic book at their local comic shops and Forbidden Planet for the UK and Europe.
For those who might not know, Skull Island: The Animated Series premiered on Netflix on June 22, 2023. It was developed by Brian Duffield, who also served as the Showrunner.
The plot’s set during the 1990s, with a group of explorers getting shipwrecked on Skull Island after rescuing a mysterious young girl named Annie (Mae Whitman) in the middle of the ocean. Of course, the iconic island houses giant creatures that can easily kill humans. The big bad is a Kraken-like creature that shares history with King Kong.
The first season consisted of 8 episodes, with each episode being approximately 25 minutes long. The major relationships explored are between the two friends, Charlie (Nicolas Cantu) and Mike (Darren Barnet), with their dynamic shifting after Annie’s introduction. While I wasn’t able to review the entire season for The Geekiary, I did bring up the possibility of Mike being a queer character.
As of writing this post and from what I could gather, there’s been no official confirmation about Skull Island: The Animated Series getting renewed for a second season. So, yeah, I guess seeing the story continue in some manner in the comic book medium could make certain Monsterverse fans happy.

Talking about Return to Skull Island issue 1, it has been written by Simon Furman (Transformers) and illustrated by Christopher Jones (Doctor Who: Once Upon a Time Lord). Staying with the animated series, the story follows a group of survivors stranded on Skull Island. As the narrative progresses, the cast will get to uncover dark secrets while trying to stay alive when every turn could prove fatal.
According to the official description, the story is set after the events of the first season of the animated series. Kong has defeated the Kraken. However, there are more dangerous threats lurking in the shadows and Kong might not be enough to guarantee victory.

“Skull Island’s shadows hide untold stories, fierce battles, and creatures unlike anything seen before. Marrying brilliant illustrations and epic storytelling, we see a new side to Kong and his kingdom. We can’t wait to share more this June!” shared Titan Comics editor Louis Yamani.

“Partnering with Titan Comics on Return to Skull Island allows us to expand the Monsterverse in exciting new ways. Bringing Skull Island from TV to comics lets us dive deeper into its mysteries, offering fans thrilling new adventures in Kong’s world,” said Robert Napton, the SVP & Publisher, Legendary Comics.
