“Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” Gets Home Release This October!

Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment is all ready to release Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital come October 20, 2025. The live-action documentary covers the cult classic musical The Rocky Horror Show.
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror is being promoted as a way for fans to explore the iconic project in a way like never before. The documentary features content from a bunch of cast members and other creatives including Richard O’Brien, Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, and Lou Adler. The doc goes over how the musical inspired the live-action movie and what continues to allow the Rocky Horror Show to resonate with people around the globe.
According to the marketing, “an extra personal layer” has been added due to how Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror has been directed by Linus O’Brien, the son of creator Richard O’Brien. Linus O’Brien shared how the musical was formed around the time he was born. He also became the youngest person to see the original stage production in London at only 4 years old.
Though Linus O’Brien was aware of the project’s impact while growing up, it wasn’t until later in his life that he was able to fully realize the personal connections between the Rocky Horror Show and its many fans. Said realization sowed the seed for the current documentary, with the queer themes of the musical and movie being as timely as ever.
Along with the creatives involved in the Rocky Horror Show, the doc also has celebrity fans such as Jack Black and RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Trixie Mattel share the cultural impact of the IP as well as their personal attachment to it.
Here’s the trailer!
Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror had its UK premiere at Sheffield DocFest. It took part in the GAZE Film Festival where it went on to win the Audience award.
The doc has been certified 15 and has an approximate running time of 89 minutes.
With the stage production debuting in 1973 and the movie adaptation in 1975, the Rocky Horror Show has experienced decades of fame and will surely continue to do so for decades to come. And as someone who has only watched the live-action film, I’m excited about viewing the doc to learn more about the original stage production.
