Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie and I’m super excited! The animated feature film will debut come August 5, 2022. I can’t wait!

As someone who enjoyed watching the Rise of the TMNT animated series, I was disappointed when it couldn’t garner a big enough fanbase to continue airing. Having debuted in July 2018, the show got canceled in August 2020 after only 2 seasons (consisting of 39 episodes). I get that it wasn’t the best TMNT show out there. But I would like to argue that it surely wasn’t the worst.

As an artist, I really appreciated how the creative team decided to give each iconic turtle a distinct look instead of following the same pattern of drawing basically identical turtles but with different colored masks and weapons. The distinct look even translated quite well in the action figures that were produced.

The action sequences featured in the animated series were another highlight. The battle in the series finale is just wow!

Anyway, what is done is done. At least the Rise of the TMNT franchise is coming back with a full-length movie for a passionate fanbase. According to the information that I could gather from the promo material, the film is set a couple of years after the series finale. The premise deals with an ancient artifact capable of summoning a powerful alien race, the Krang, to Earth in the present. Things aren’t great in the future, and that causes Casey Jones to be flung into the past to prevent an apocalyptic future from taking place.

While our heroic team in the present doesn’t believe Casey in the beginning, they learn to accept what he’s saying as the truth. However, even though they all work together, they are unable to stop the Krang from coming to Earth. The story is going to follow the usual trope of the heroes suffering a great loss (the turtles lose their mystical abilities), only for them to find a new power to help win the final battle.

Yes, the plot is predictable and nothing is going to happen to the turtles, but I’m so here for what the Rise of TMNT movie has in store.

Here’s my reaction to the official trailer!

I can just feel that action sequences are going to be epic. Also, we are getting aged-up turtles in the future scenes!

As for Casey Jones being introduced in the movie, from what I can remember, the Rise of the TMNT animated series already gave us a female version of Casey through Cassandra “Casey” Jones. Now, I could be wrong, but I think Cassandra will be revealed to be an ancestor of the version of Casey from the future. But let’s see.

The cast includes Ben Schwartz as Leonardo/Leo, Omar Benson Miller as Raphael/Raph, Brandon Mychal Smith as Michelangelo/Mikey, Josh Brener as Donatello/Donnie, Kat Graham as April O’Neil, Eric Bauza as Splinter, and Haley Joel Osment as Casey Jones.

What did you think of the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie official trailer?

I’m clearly hyped.

Fingers crossed the movie does so well that Netflix decides to greenlight a new season.
