The trailer for Wynonna Earp season 3 is here!
The season 3 trailer for SyFy Channel’s hit Wynonna Earp has finally arrived. Here is a spoilery breakdown of a few highlights to help your “polite no chill” Wynonna Earp squeeing needs. (Warning: some spoilers through the end of season 2 and spoilers from the season 3 trailer follow).
Showrunner Emily Andras and cast members Melanie Scrofano, Kat Barrell, and Tim Rozon were in attendance for a Wynonna Earp panel at Austin Television Festival (ATX) on Friday. The panel offered hints about what’s to come and released a season 3 trailer.
The SyFy blog has posted the trailer online and the speculation, gif-making, delighted freak-outs, and theorizing has begun. If you check out the #WynonnaEarp tag on twitter you’ll see one of the most upbeat and active fandoms out there.
Wynonna Earp debuted on the SyFy Channel in April 2016 and centers around Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano), a descendant of legendary gunslinger Wyatt Earp. The series premise is that Wyatt Earp was actually a demon slayer with a magic gun, which has now been passed into Wynonna’s hands. Her sister Waverly (Domonique Provost-Chalkley) is a whizz at historical research and has a complicated mystery of her own unraveling. Joining the Earp sisters in their fight against evil is Deputy Marshall Xavier Dolls (Shamier Anderson), who is part dragon (he can breathe fire, it’s pretty cool) and who recruits Wynonna into the Black Badge Division, a federal agency that investigates the paranormal (kind of like The X-Files). Officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrel) has a promising career in law enforcement and adjusts ably to the weirdness of discovering demons exist. Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) (yes THE Doc Holliday, it’s a long story) has a soft spot for the Earp family despite his attempts to play the self-interested operator. He also was Wyatt Earp’s best friend but the two had a falling out. Black Badge lab technician Jeremy Chetri (Varun Saranga) has also been pulled into the supernatural battle, and season 3 is introducing another new character we don’t have a lot of details on yet, Kate (Chantel Riley).
The end of season 2 also revealed that Mama Earp is still very much alive after all. Megan Follows will join the show in season 3 to play Mama Earp. There is also the matter of Wynonna and Doc’s daughter, who even if she isn’t seen in season 3 seems likely be a plot point. While Wynonna is involved romantically with both Doc and Dolls, the show seems to be in no hurry to her to choose between them. Doc and Dolls get along, Wynonna is usually too busy slaying demons to think too hard about her love life, and the show’s handling of this very loose triangle is refreshing. Both men genuinely love Wynonna and are on the side of the good guys.
There are a few canon romantic relationships in Wynonna Earp, and the romance between Nicole and Waverly (which fans have dubbed “Wayhaught”) has been developed honestly and sweetly, and not without joy as well as realistic conflicts and bumps on the journey. There are multiple LGBT+ characters who get to be heroic, and the show includes and explores relationships of all types for them and for all the characters. Showrunner Andras enjoys challenging overused tropes, especially concerning how LGBT+ characters are treated on TV. For example, season 2 had an episode where all the other characters were killed off (temporarily) and only the show’s queer characters survived to save everyone else.
The series is an appealing mix of horror, humor, snark, emotion, and gothic Americana, where women carry the bulk of the narrative and are the main story movers.
Wynonna Earp returns for season 3 on July 20th. There will be a sneak-peak of the season premiere after Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on SyFy Channel July 16th.
The trailer for season 3 looks to be continuing that and has an even stronger horror bent to it, as well as an eerie yet irreverent vibe.

Here’s a few highlights:
The cinematography of this series is incredible, not just for the western scenery shots, but its visual style.
Doc Holliday standing in a ring holding his ring. What does it mean?
It’s Wynonna Earp…with her mom! Megan Follows is Mama Earp! Megan Follows is on Wynonna Earp! *freaks out*
Dolls seems to be dragoning out.
Bobo, is that you??
Officer Haught investigating what looks like a gruesome crime scene.
Two mustaches are better than one. Maybe Jeremy decided to emulate Doc (who Jeremy openly has a crush on).
Who is Dolls fighting here? What is happening???
The question that has consumed Wynonna Earp fandom: who is this person with Waverly, and why are they licking a potato?
Not sure what that glowy thing is—a spirit, a magic spell? Either way, it’s probably something dangerous and this shot is really pretty.
Wayhaught seems to be thriving in season 3.
“Stop quipping and start running!” is one of my favorite moments in the trailer. Nicole and Wynonna’s friendship is so good.
Here’s a glimpse of Kate with Wynonna. The new character looks like no one to be messed with.
Waverly being dragged through the snow, screaming, leaving a bloody trail. That’s not good. Oh no, Waverly!
Jeremy, Doc, Wynonna, and Dolls doing the power walk thing.
Nicole, Jeremy, and Waverly. When is the last time you saw this many LGBT+ people on screen at the same time fighting to save the day in a genre TV show? On Wynonna Earp, LGBT+ people are here to save your bacon, not to be killed off.
There were plenty of other eye-catching moments, like Dolls releasing a very much alive Wynonna from what looks like a coffin, Waverly shotgun-slinging and Mama Earp gun-slinging action, Nicole and her flashlight, lots of blood, lots of kissing, some kind of dream-sequence looking family dinner, and a new big bad in a hat and a long coat.
