Ocean’s 8 Is Looking at an Opening Weekend Gross North of $40 Million
Having premiered this week in 4,145 locations across North America, the Sandra Bullock-led female ensemble Ocean’s 8 is looking at an impressive $41 million opening weekend.
Ocean’s 8 is the fourth film in the rebooted Ocean’s franchise. The previous three films were led by George Clooney. Ocean’s 8 was able to earn $15.8 million on Friday (which includes Thursday previews’ $4 million). Analyst forecasts estimated the opening weekend to be between the $30 million to $44 million range.
Boasting a star-studded cast, the latest installment in the franchise focuses on Debbie Ocean (Danny Ocean’s sister) who plans a diamond heist at the Met Gala. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, as well as a number of cameos.
Gary Ross serves as director, also co-writing the script with Oliva Milch. The film has an estimated production budget of $70 million. Steven Soderbergh returns to the franchise as a producer with Susan Elkins.
If the estimates hold, the newest installment (not adjusted for inflation) will have the best opening in the franchise (including the 1960 original) yet.
Solo: A Star Wars Story comes in at second place at the box office with Deadpool 2 and horror-flick Hereditary taking third and fourth places respectively. Hotel Artemis debuted at 8th place with $3.24 million from 2,407 US locations.
Next week will see the premiere of Incredibles 2 (June 15, 2018) in the US. I don’t know how well Ocean’s 8 will be able to hold. However, I do hope Warner Bros. decides to continue the series. Perhaps a team-up between Debbie and Danny’s people down the line for a major heist?
This month will also have the premiere of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on June 22, 2018, in North America. The dinosaur flick has been performing very well internationally. As a popcorn movie, I gave Jurassic World 2 a 7/10. But if you begin to question some of the events that occur, the number goes down to a 5 or lower.
Have you watched Ocean’s 8 yet? Did you enjoy it? Let us know.

I loved Ocean’s 8! It’s a lot of fun, I laughed a bunch, and everyone looks fabulous.
Yes. It is an enjoyable film. That’s why I hope it continues. Or like Warner Bros. should give the rights to Netflix and let them churn out fun Ocean’s films ^^
