Zombieland 2 Is Finally Confirmed! Original Cast Is Returning!
Zombieland was released back in 2009. It offered a fresh comedic take on the post-apocalyptic world full of the undead. Starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, the film went on to make $102.4 million at the global box office against a $23 million production budget. Now, with a sequel finally in the works, will Zombieland 2 be met with a similar positive response a decade later?
I enjoyed watching Zombieland and I still remember all of the talks about it getting a sequel. However, years went by and we never got to rejoin the characters for another zombie-killing adventure. While I am glad Zombieland 2 is happening, and that too with the original cast, I can’t help but wonder if the upcoming movie will still be able to offer something fresh to the current audience.
Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are returning for Zombieland 2 along with director Ruben Fleischer. The project plans to begin shooting in January with a possible October 2019 release.
Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch said, “This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time — and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”
Plot details are being kept under wraps. Apparently, our team of original characters will have to go up against an evolved breed of zombies as well as fellow survivors.
It is awesome to see everyone coming back for the sequel, considering how much they have achieved over a decade of working in Hollywood since the first film. Emma Stone is now a Best Actress Oscar winner (La La Land), with her co-stars continuing to work consistently.
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese co-wrote the highly successful Deadpool film series. Director Ruben Fleischer recently directed Sony’s Venom, which stars Tom Hardy.
Talking about zombie comedies, Focus Features has begun production on The Dead Don’t Die with Jim Jarmusch. The stellar cast includes Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, and Selena Gomez.
Do you think there is still an audience out there for zombie comedies, at least to a degree which can help such projects become worldwide box office success stories?
