“School Memories” by Sharean Morishita is Available on Kindle February 21st!

Sharean Morishita’s short comic, School Memories, will be available on Kindle February 21st. A talent to watch, Sharean knows how to entice her audience with evocative stories navigating themes like self-worth and mental health.

I had the pleasure of reviewing Sharean’s work, Love! Love! Fighting! & Catch Me! Fight Me! Love Me!, and interviewing her as well. I admire the care and skill she shows in portraying the challenges and joys of interpersonal relationships. School Memories, a manga one-shot centering on two elementary school kids, shows the importance of compassion and expressing empathy.

In School Memories, class clown Colton doesn’t see the potential harm in doing his pranks until it’s too late. The teacher assigns him to the new student, Echo, to prepare for school picture day. During their hair prep, Colton humiliates Echo with a prank. He eventually learns that seemingly harmless fun can emotionally damage someone. What’s comical for someone might not be so for another person. He’s stepped out of line with his prank on Echo, and so he has to face the consequences. As well-nuanced as Sharean’s other work, School Memories doesn’t fail to get its point across.

School Memories is available to read on Tapas and on the creator’s website, but I highly recommend purchasing a digital copy. Sharean Morishita draws out the most human stories. Her work is more than worth checking out.
