First Impressions: “Vampire Magicka”

Vampire Magicka by Bryan Golden
Vampire Magicka

Bryan Golden, the creator of Strawberry Seafoam, makes a grand return with their new Original WebToon series, Vampire Magicka (edited by Aria Villafranca). It’s cute, fun, and endearing to read.

Visare dreams of being like the magical girl from his favorite anime, Bunny Tenshi. Except for one fact: he’s also a vampire. He thinks that his monstrosity would make him a legit magical boy. But then a little bat called Draga crashes into his home and he discovers a magic pendant in the basement. Now he’s a magical boy. When he finds out that his sister, Viorica, has gone missing, Visare sets off to rescue her.

I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing Strawberry Seafoam and then interviewing Bryan last year. Vampire Magicka is just as fun and lovely. I find myself smiling while reading because the characters, especially Visare, are lovable. The dynamics between Visare and Viorica impress me. The flashbacks provide a complex angle in a few panels. The exciting science fantasy and Gothic horror elements and clever characterization make this more than worth reading.

Magical girl anime fans will recognize the genre’s tropes and references, including nods to Sailor Moon. The science fantasy elements reference Frankenstein. From the first three available episodes, I know that Visare’s narrative arc will be compelling. I can’t wait to see where Visare goes next and the future obstacles he’ll face. Plus, Draga the bat has already stolen my heart.
