Breaking Glass Pictures is ready for the North American release of the ’70s-inspired queer Bolivian horror movie Blood-Red Ox. Serving as the first horror feature by Bolivian award-winning director Rodrigo Bellott, Blood-Red Ox will have a limited theatrical this October, with a VOD, digital, and DVD release to follow come November 8, 2022.

Rodrigo Bellott (the director behind Bolivia’s Academy Award entries Sexual Dependency and Tu Me Manques) describes Blood-Red Ox as a project that began as a personal exploration and homage to the psychological horror movies of Polanski, Bergman, and Argento in the ’70s and ’80s, but with a contemporary twist.

Not only that but the current film was also inspired by Bellott’s personal experience with a boyfriend with mental health issues. According to Bellott, this happens to be his most personal film in a way.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Blood-Red Ox follows Amir and Amat, who are invited on a trip into the South American rain forest, but quickly find the pleasant visit to Bolivia taking a bizarre turn as Amat starts having strange visions and loses his mind over the ghostly presence of a giant blood-red ox. Amir must save his boyfriend from paranoia, but he quickly realizes that he can trust nothing and nobody – as he might be losing his mind too.

Blood-Red Ox stars Mazin Akar and Kaolin Bass as the main romantic couple who find themselves descending into madness. Andrea Camponovo serves as the couple’s fellow adventurer into the darkness.

The film has been produced by Rodrigo A. Orozco, Rodrigo Bellott, Kaolin Bass, and Andrea Camponovo. The Executive Producers are Nate Atkins, Bernardo Ratto, Gunnar Pareja, Beto Lema, and Virginio Lema.

Here’s the trailer!

As far as the trailer is concerned, I do like the overall visuals. There’s something quite enticing about all the red lighting and certain shots. The entire film comes across as aesthetically gripping, in my opinion. However, I have no idea how the actual story will play out. Movies, especially those in the horror genre, don’t have the best track record when it comes to handling heavy issues like mental health.

For those of you who might not know, Blood-Red Ox ended up having its World Premiere at the Guadalajara International Film Festival where it played in competition. The film went on to play numerous festivals including OUTshine Film Festival, the 38th Chicago Latino Film Festival, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Kerala.

Take note; Blood-Red Ox will arrive on November 8, 2022, on DVD and digital, VOD platforms including iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, Dish/Dish Digital as well as local cable and satellite providers.
