Today I have author K.A. Cross with me. Her debut novel “Life On The Rocks” is about a teenage girl’s struggle in a male dominated household, who also happens to belong to a family of werewolves. Check out our exclusive interview with the author where we talk about her own struggles in life, her love for writing, and up-coming works.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am mother of two from the famous university town of Oxford. During the week I’m pretty much a stay at home mom, working part-time during the weekends as a cleaner at a shopping center. During my free time I love to spend time with my family and of course write.

When did you decide to start writing?

I’ve pretty much been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to take a notebook to school with me so I could write any chance I got. As I got older and stepped into the world of work I backed away from my passion. It wasn’t until the birth of my son, who is now five years old, that I started writing again. I wrote several stories on the site Wattpad until I wrote Life On The Rocks after the birth of my daughter, now two. I began to suffer with post natal depression and was put on antidepressants. As well as being on medication, I had regular visits from a local outreach worker. It was then that I truly rediscovered my love for writing. It was a major factor in my recovery.

Other authors who have inspired your work?

Growing up, I constantly had a book in my hand. I absolutely loved Melvin Burgess, I admired that fact that he seemed fearless. Often writing about taboo subjects like drugs and teen sex. His book Doing It, is one of my favorites. Other than that, I love anything supernatural, especially Stephanie Meyer. Now as an adult, I am a major fan of E. L. James. I’d definitely say they have all influenced my work.

How’s the reaction from your family been towards your writing?

My entire family was over the moon when I told them I was getting published. They all knew that it was a childhood dream of mine. In fact most of them bought more than one copy, one for reading and one for display. My partner has even requested I sign a copy of the cover so he can frame it.

Are there any other works you wrote but never published?

I have several books on the social site Wattpad. Many of them, though, are unfinished and on hold. Many of them fall under the same genre as Life On The Rocks, except for one which is a twist on The Wizard Of Oz. It’s called Trippin’ Down The Yellow Brick Road. It focuses on the impact of drugs and alcohol. There is also the first book I ever completed, The Girl Who Cried Wolf, I do hope to publish it one day but for the moment, it is on the back burner.

What can you tell us about “Life on the Rocks“? What kind of readers will it appeal to?

Life On The Rocks started as a little fun project, I never really intended for it to be much at all. I started writing it to help me get back into the swing of things after taking a break during my second pregnancy. It was going to be a light hearted short story but then my depression set in. As I spiraled down, the story took on a darker form. Soon I became dependent on it; it became my only escape from the horrible thoughts that swam around my mind. Soon it grew in popularity and before I knew it, it was ranking highly on the site.

It’s at times an emotional book following the life of Ray. She is a teenage werewolf/Lycan in a male dominant pack. Her future has been planned out for her from the day she was born and she longs for nothing more than her freedom. When tragedy and betrayal strike, her world is turned upside down; she becomes a shell of the girl she once was. When she meets her true mate, she struggles to trust him and truly let herself love him. As they grow closer they are watched by a demon from her past who plans on ripping them apart.

I’d say Life On The Rocks would appeal to anyone who loves paranormal/supernatural fiction. It is an adult book as there are sexual scenes of a sexual nature and frequent bad language. I’d like to think that at times this book would make you laugh and cry. It is definitely a book for those who love an untraditional love story.

10858347_333695346814273_2104897201474323002_nYou also run a blog, right? What can you tell us about it?

I started my blog a while before I approached my publishers, hoping it might help engage fans. To start with, I didn’t really know what I was doing, never having done anything like it before. Once I got my publishing contract, I created my own website and stepped away from the blog. Now I am using it as a platform to help my fellow authors. I post weekly author interviews and will be starting a review section, posting all the books I have recently reviewed.

What are your thoughts about self and traditional publishing?

I made up my mind early on in 2014, that one way or another I was going to publish my book. I looked at several different self-publishing websites as well as traditional publishers. I was lucky that I got a positive response from the first publishers I contacted. Dream Big Publishing is a small company who work with new authors like myself. I am extremely grateful that they took a chance on me. I think if I didn’t get anywhere with any publishers, I would have definitely self-published. Of course with self-publishing you get a lot more freedom but twice the work. I’m glad I have the publishers to do all the formatting for me.

Any upcoming works we should know about?

I am currently editing the sequel to Life On The Rocks, Life Straight Up. My aim is to send it to my publishers sometime in the new year and have it published. I have also started the third book in the trilogy, Life Shaken And Stirred, which I plan to work on more in the new year. As well as this I have started a new novella series, The Heavenly Sin Series. The first book, Lust, is almost complete and has already gathered interest from my publishers. So, hopefully in the next year I shall have two more published books, fingers crossed possibly more.
