Webcomic Recommendation: “Wilde Life”

In Wilde Life by Pascalle Lepas, a man named Oscar rents a house that’s apparently haunted and encounters several supernatural situations along the way. This horror webcomic contains elements of drama and comedy, producing a story that will enchant more than haunt its readers.
Podunk, Oklahoma: a small town where nothing interesting happens…or so it seems. Writer Oscar Wilde (yes, like the literary figure) moves from Chicago, Illinois, seeking inspiration and an escape from a tumultuous past, and rents a house, via Craigslist, from a woman named Barbara. The house’s previous inhabitants had suddenly moved out, leaving their belongings and furniture behind. Oscar will eventually find out that the house is haunted and that this town isn’t as mundane as it appears to be. As he stumbles upon and befriends some of these supernatural beings, however, Oscar starts to realize that maybe this isn’t the worst thing he could have ever experienced.
While the paranormal happenings will be familiar to some readers — objects moving on their own and doors opening and closing — the haunting becomes cleverly subtle. The supernatural moments take a significant turn, with the art style requiring inference from its audience.

The webcomic’s storytelling is also impressive. Wilde Life shows that it’s more than just a story about a man living in a haunted house and then encountering werewolves, witches, vengeful spirits, and more. While the story focuses on Oscar, there are chapters that switch to Clifford, the teenage werewolf. Readers will also get to know the ghost haunting Oscar’s new house: a woman named Sylvia, who died in 1948 and was a mathematician.
A conscientious man who is reasonable when he needs to be, Oscar deals with the (figurative) demons he’s thought to have left behind. He’s moved to Podunk in hopes of a fresh start, but learns that he has to eventually confront the past. Meanwhile, he also learns to appreciate the small moments that life has to offer. It’s easy to take the time we have for granted, and this horror webcomic conveys the importance of enjoying the little details every day.
