“Defenders” Update: New Set Pics, a Mystery Villain, and Returning Characters
Things look a little tense between Jessica Jones and Detective Misty Knight in the first pictures from the set of Marvel’s Defenders. Misty, whose return to the screen was just confirmed yesterday, is all business with her detective badge prominently clipped to her belt. For her part, Jessica seems as unimpressed by being at gunpoint as ever. I’m not sure what’s happening here, but if these pictures are any indication of what to expect I’m going to have a hard time waiting until next year.
Luckily for us, Marvel and Netflix have been pretty generous with the updates lately. Besides confirming Simone Missick’s return as Misty, they announced yesterday that Deborah Ann Woll will bring Karen Page back to the screen. Popular characters Foggy Nelson, Jeri Hogarth and Malcolm Ducasse will appear as well.
We also know that Sigourney Weaver plays Defenders’ central villain, though we don’t know who that is yet. I’m leaning towards Viper (AKA Madame Hydra) for a couple of reasons. First, Viper has a history of involvement with the Big Apple branch of Hydra. It would be easy to weave her into the NYC microcosm built through the other shows. Second (and I admit I’m reaching a little here) Weaver wore a conspicuous flash of Viper’s trademark green to the NYCC panel where her casting was announced. Marvel is famous for sly in-references like this, so I have to wonder: does Sigourney Weaver just like green or is she telling us something?
Whoever the villain is, she has to be someone with enough pull in the various storylines to drag Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Iron Fist together fast. Marvel’s Defenders, which is due to hit Netflix after Iron Fist, will only be eight episodes long. I’m both disappointed (I’m always up for more Marvel) and relieved. A shorter run might fix the slight drag we’ve seen in the middle of some of the other shows.
What do you think? Do you have a better guess for Weaver’s character? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Jessica Jones looks beat up in the photo with Misty Knight. That would take real power!
I”m looking forward to The Defenders. Thank you for the update.
