Complicated Updates Regarding the Racist and Homophobic Attack on Jussie Smollett
I won’t lie. The new details emerging regarding the alleged racist and homophobic attack against actor Jussie Smollett (of Empire fame) continue to make the case complicated.
After the unfortunate incident was reported, social media was quick to pick sides. Many came forward to share their support for Smollett and raising their voices against the dangers that queer POC continue to face. However, another group also came forward saying Smollett was lying. Their disbelief in Smollett is related to how the two men who attached Smollett were allegedly MAGA supporters.
According to ABC News, a dozen detectives are pursuing new leads and have tracked the actor’s movements that night through video and photos.
In the video, Jussie Smollett can be seen “walking across the street from two possible persons of interest, whose photos were released late Wednesday to the public.”
Smollett walks out of frame for about a minute and reappears on another camera “wearing a rope like a necktie,” police said.
The police are trying to talk about to the alleged attackers see in the video.
As of Thursday morning, the press office for the Chicago Police Department told ABC News there haven’t been any new developments.
President Donald Trump also shared his opinion regarding the attack.
Furthermore, Brandon Z. Moore, Smollett’s music manager, told ABC News he was on the phone with the actor when he heard part of the alleged attack. Moore heard the words “MAGA country,” presumably from the alleged attackers.
“I heard that clearly,” he told ABC News. “I heard the scuffle and I heard the racial slur.”
The police have confirmed they have spoken to Moore. Detectives have not yet seen phone records to confirm Smollett and Moore’s accounts.
We will keep you posted on what happens.
