With 11 new episodes of Power Rangers Dino Fury season 2 becoming available on Netflix, I was looking forward to seeing how the writers would handle the queer romantic relationship between Izzy and Fern. Episode 17 really served as a monumental moment for both young women.

Be warned! This piece includes certain spoilers for Power Rangers Dino Fury Season 2 Episode 17.

Over the course of the first two seasons of Power Rangers Dino Fury, the writers have done a good job of introducing an out queer Power Ranger in Izzy (Tessa Rao), along with providing a satisfactory amount of screentime between Izzy and her girlfriend Fern (Jacqueline Joe). And while I enjoyed their relationship development, I continued to be a bit bothered about Fern not knowing about Izzy being a Power Ranger as time went on. I get that being a Power Ranger is supposed to be a secret, but then again, a romantic relationship can’t really thrive if your girlfriend doesn’t know about such a huge part of your life.

Fortunately, episode 17, titled ‘Things Unspoken’, finally changed that. With Fern getting accepted into the college of her dreams and having to move away, it was time for Izzy to come clean about more than one secret she’s been keeping. I liked how the writers handled the entire situation and how it helped strengthen the relationship between the two queer characters.

The way Fern told the Green Ranger that she loved Izzy without realizing that it was Izzy under the costume and how it all came full circle when Izzy said “I love you, too” near the end of the episode was impressive writing, in my opinion. Both actresses also did a great job of hitting all the emotional beats during their scenes together.

While they are still young, Izzy and Fern showed a commendable level of maturity. Izzy revealed how her duties as a Power Ranger made her reject her admission to the same college as Fern and Fern understood the pressure of Izzy’s responsibilities. Both young women supported each other decisions.

Not only that, but the writers made it clear that their long-distance relationship was going to survive. Fern was going to come back once a month. And of course, if Fern felt way too lonely, there’s a Power Rangers hotline and Izzy could also teleport to Fern.

As the season continued, I was glad to see that their relationship did survive. The finale of season 2, episode 22 ‘The Nemesis’, showed Fern sharing a meal with Izzy and her friends after Izzy’s graduation. And Izzy was excited to finally go to the same college Fern was attending.

Izzy’s story still has more chapters to go because the current cast will be part of the upcoming Power Rangers Cosmic Fury TV series. The cast not being changed for a new iteration in the Power Rangers franchise is a first since the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days.

PR Cosmic Fury is supposed to air sometime in 2023. I’m looking forward to seeing how the writers will continue developing Izzy and Fern’s relationship.

Episodes 12 to 22 of Power Rangers Dino Fury season 2 became available on Netflix today.
