Godzilla returns! …to Netflix. The streaming platform announced today that the world’s most famous super-lizard will be back in an all new adventure in the original anime series Godzilla Singular Point.

Following the success of the the recent Godzilla anime films Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle and Godzilla: The Planet Eater, Studio bones and Orange are teaming up to bring an all-new original anime series with a brand new cast and original story. Godzilla Singular Point is set to launch globally in 2021.

Studio bones (Boku no Hero Academia) and studio Orange (Beastars, Land of the Lustrous) have partnered together to produce the series, which will be a combination of hand-drawn animation and computer-generated styles. Beastars, studio Orange’s first original anime series, is also distributed by Netflix.

According to the press release, the creative team includes director Atsushi Takahashi (Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi), composer Ken Sawada (composer of countless Doraemon films and series such as Yowamushi Pedal), editor and writer Toh Enjoe (making the jump to TV from writing Japanese science fiction novels), character designer Kazue Kato (creator of Blue Exorcist), and animator animator Eiji Yamamori (from Studio Ghibli films including Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and The Wind Rises), who will do the Kaiju design.

The brand new storyline featured in the series will be unrelated to the previous anime films.

Godzilla Singular Point is the latest in a long string of Netflix-distributed anime content. Just last week, Netflix announced Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and earlier this year they revealed the voice cast for Masters of the Universe: Revelation, an anime inspired by the popular He-Man franchise. This summer, the first of three Transformers anime films focusing on the Cybertron war and the Transformers’ journey to Earth dropped on the platform.

I admire Netflix for doing their best to bring more anime content into the mainstream, and I have high expectations for Godzilla Singular Point!
