Wednesday Webcomics: It’s “Now and Forever Nia”
A widower protects his daughter from demonic creatures in this wondrous webcomic about familial love and letting loved ones fight their own battles. Now and Forever Nia by Sam Concklin unfolds a beautiful and dynamic relationship between father and daughter. Originally a short webcomic on WebToon, Now and Forever Nia has recently been released as a graphic novel, backed by supporters on Indiegogo.
Eran’s wife passes away, leaving him with their newborn daughter Nia. At home, a demonic creature appears before him, saying that Nia might be the chosen one. In other words, she’s in danger. Monsters from the underworld will hunt her throughout her life. Eran doesn’t want to lose his daughter too, so he watches out and fights the monsters during her childhood and teen years. However, his unsung efforts start to become overprotective, leading to conflict between him and Nia. As she nears eighteen, her need to evade her dad’s strict rules becomes more desirable. Either Eran has to confess what’s really going on or face the likelihood of his daughter leaving him.
Nia falls in love with another young woman later on in the story, but of course, that’s not the source of her being pursued by otherworldly beings. The webcomic focuses on the relationship between her and her father and the mystery surrounding the creatures. Sam Concklin’s clever storytelling and characterization shine here. I’m thoroughly impressed with the execution and gorgeous message of how love means letting someone grow on their own. Although Concklin has expanded the story into a full graphic novel, the six-episode webcomic packs enough emotional moments and memorable characters to linger in your mind after reading.
Now and Forever Nia is available to read on WebToon. The graphic novel version, backed by supporters on Indiegogo, was released on June 1st.
