Crime Mystery Series “True Detective” Greenlit for Season 5 with Issa López Returning
In very exciting news, HBO has gone ahead and renewed the crime mystery series True Detective for a fifth season. Season 4 showrunner Issa López will return to helm the next installment in the long-running franchise.
I mean, the fact HBO decided to renew True Detective for season 5 wasn’t a surprise. The fourth season True Detective: Night Country went on to become the most-watched chapter with 12.7 million viewers across multiple platforms. What’s great to hear is that HBO will bring back showrunner Issa López to work on the fifth season. Not only that, but López will be creating and developing new projects for HBO as well. She deserves to be recognized for her work after more than delivering for the network.
“Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera,” shared HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi. “Alongside Jodie [Foster] and Kali [Reis]’ impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
Handing over the franchise to López isn’t without some drama though, and I’m not talking about the fun kind. While series creator Nic Pizzolatto will continue being credited as executive producer (and compensated as the franchise continues), Pizzolatto has been very clear about his opinions regarding True Detective: Night Country. I don’t want to share the types of “criticism” he has apparently supported against the show, but you can head over to The Mary Sue to take a look.
I don’t consider True Detective: Night Country as the most well-written crime murder mystery ever. However, I’m more than capable of sharing my opinions without resorting to misogyny, racism, and homophobia. And yet that appears to not come easily to certain types of people.
As of writing this article, Pizzolatto has created a peculiar Instagram post addressing the drama and backlash.
In contrast, I haven’t seen a single instance of López saying anything bad about Pizzolatto’s work even though we know how True Detective season two panned out.
Anyway, back to the good stuff.
López has shared no information about what she thinks season 5 will offer fans. However, she seems to have an idea about what type of story she wants to tell.
As far as my opinion goes, I’m okay with waiting as long as necessary to ensure season 5 hits right. Doing a spiritual sequel to a successful debut can be tough.
All the best to her!
