Two More Free! Films Coming
The revived Free! anime is getting even more content! A Dive to the Future compilation film is coming this summer, and a brand-new film will arrive in summer 2020.
Recently announced, season 3 of the popular Free! anime is getting its own compilation film to join previous films Timeless Medley Kizuna and Timeless Medley Yakusoku, which reconstructed the anime’s second season from the viewpoints of the opposing swim clubs. Kizuna focused on the Iwatobi boys (Haru, Makoto, Nagisa, Rei) and Yakusoku was about the Samezuka boys (Rin, Sousuke). Like many similar recap films, both Kizuna and Yakusoku featured new scenes both rounding out the story we’d already seen in season 2 as well as setting up the upcoming season 3. The Dive to the Future compilation film will be in the same vein, and include a bonus “new episode”.
The Dive to the Future compilation film has a release date of July 5 of this year, presumably when it will hit theaters in Japan.
We will also be getting a brand new film in summer 2020, just in time for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. This was teased at the end of the last episode of season 3, which simply said “see you in 2020”. The film seems to be called Road to 2020 and will no doubt center around the Olympics in some fashion. A season 3 teaser image at the end of Take Your Marks showed Haru in a Team Japan jacket, which led to speculation that the season would be about training for the Olympics. This was sort of accurate (Dive to the Future was primarily about Haru mending his friendship with Ikuya), since the final episode has Haru and Rin racing head-to-head to qualify for the All-Japan team, but at no point did Haru appear in the jacket from the promotional campaign. They seem to be rectifying that in this new film!
Kyoto Animation announced these new films in a video.
I’ll admit that when I saw “see you in 2020”, I was hoping for a new season, but I am perfectly happy with a film as long as it means I get to see my Iwatobi boys again!
What do you all think of this news? What extra content do you think we’ll get in the Dive to the Future compilation film? What are you hoping to see in Road to 2020?
