Free! Celebrates 5 Years with New Key Visual
On April 26, 2013, the first key visual was revealed for Free!. Today, the official Twitter account celebrated the Free 5th anniversary by revealing a brand new key visual for the upcoming season 3.
Season 3 was hinted at the premiere event for Free! Take Your Marks, when the end card said “See you next stage”, and officially confirmed on Twitter afterward. So far, all we know about season 3 is that it premieres sometime this summer and it may possibly focus on Haru’s professional swimming career, given the graphic that has been prominently featured, which shows Haru in the uniform of the Japanese national swimming team. There has been a lot of speculation but nothing really definitive yet. Presumably Haru will be the main character, but Take Your Marks gave some indication that the other characters would not be forgotten.
Now, with the Free 5th anniversary, we have another promotional photo to add to the collection, but sadly still no firm release date. A tweet suggested that we would get some news soon, and hopefully it’s a premiere date!

In celebration of the Free 5th anniversary, the official Twitter has been posting promo photos from the series. Free! was one of the anime that I watched when I first started my descent into the rabbit hole, and I absolutely fell in love with the Iwatobi boys. It’s been nice to relive the first two seasons, and it reminds me I should probably do a rewatch soon.

They’ve taken a break (time zones, ugh), but I’m eager for more photos! There are only a couple of months left until this summer, and while we don’t have a set date for the return yet, surely they have to have something to show us.
I’m beyond excited for season 3. Take Your Marks functioned well both as a conclusion to the first two seasons and as a way to kick off season 3. Without really knowing what we’ll get in season 3, we can only guess, but there were enough seeds planted in the film to give us some good clues. Obviously Haru and Rin will continue in their training – Haru in Tokyo and Rin in Australia – and presumably we will get to see both. With Haru as the focus of the season 3 marketing campaign, it’s clear that he’ll be the center of the new season. As Makoto is in Tokyo as well, I’m sure he’ll be there a lot.
I can’t imagine we’d have a season of Free! without Rei and Nagisa, so hopefully we pop in on Iwatobi occasionally. And given that we saw Sosuke going to the doctor about his shoulder, I’m sure we can expect to get some updates on him. Also, I’d like to think that the reason we saw Asahi, Ikuya, Natsuya, and Nao in Take Your Marks is because we’ll also see them in season 3. Fingers crossed!
What do you guys hope to see in season 3? Considering today is the Free 5th anniversary, what are your favorite moments from the series as a whole?
