Fury Road Prequel or Mad Max Sequel: Which will it be?
Yes, Fury Road was actually called Mad Max: Fury Road, but can anyone really argue with the fact that Charlize Theron’s Furiosa was the real star of the show? It doesn’t seem so, because despite rumors of sequels, it’s a Fury Road prequel that seems to be in pre-production.
Australia’s Herald Sun claims that the Fury Road prequel will be filming in Australia, but good luck getting more information without subscribing to the newspaper. The basic information also seems to be flawed; George Miller is named as the director, despite his previous claims that he wouldn’t be involved in another Mad Max movie until he’d produced something else. Additionally, despite claiming that the Fury Road prequel is already in pre-production, the article also states that filming could start as soon as before the end of 2016…which is a little bit suspect, if you ask me.
Of course despite Miller claiming that it would be some time before he worked on another Mad Max installment, I have to imagine that it’s difficult for him to ignore Fury Road’s success. The movie grossed almost $400 million worldwide, and at the 2016 Oscars it was nominated for ten awards and took home six of them – more than any other film that night. So I suppose the first big question about an upcoming Fury Road prequel is whether or not Miller had a long enough break since the eight months he spent filming Mad Max: Fury Road?
And as for it being a Fury Road prequel, well – there were a lot of great characters in the movie, but for my part I have to say that the women – the wives and of course Furiosa – stood out far more than the men, especially Max himself. While I might be inclined to go see a sequel that still featured Furiosa, The Dag, Cheedo, Capable, and/or Toast, my butt would be in a theater seat opening weekend for a prequel focusing on Furiosa herself. We need more female-led movies, and I definitely want to know more about her backstory.
Do you think it’s likely that Miller has given in and will be filming another Mad Max/Fury Road movie soon? Would you prefer it to be a Fury Road prequel, or do you think a Mad Max sequel could work? Let us know in the comments!
