If you’re into queer-inclusive messy stories about growing up, I think you will enjoy reading Getting It Together issue 1 from writers Sina Grace and Omar Spahi.

I’m not a fan of romantic entanglements. However, I decided to pick up Getting It Together issue 1 because I enjoyed Grace’s work in the Iceman comic book series. Also, if I already know that things are going to get messy, I can handle them better.

Getting It Together, from Image Comics, has been promoted as a miniseries that will cover the relationship and professional complications that young 20-year-olds face. From the main cover, you can tell it’s basically going to be Friends, but not everyone’s straight.

Getting It Together issue 1 opened with Jack being caught in the middle of drama after his sister Lauren broke up with his best friend Sam. Apparently, there was some miscommunication when Lauren and Sam decided to open up their relationship.

Sam’s clearly not over Lauren. Maybe he needs time or perhaps the two will get back together down the line? I’m actually surprised at myself for being interested in finding out what will happen. Ha!

While Jack’s trying to balance his interactions with Sam and Lauren, the issue also focused on his love life. I appreciated Grace and Spahi for not shying away from depicting queer interactions in the dialogue (as well as in the artwork).

Talking about the artwork (lines by Jenny D. Fine and Grace with colors by Mx. Struble), it’s quite simple yet perfect for the story being told. The characters moved on the panels and everyone’s very expressive. I loved it.

The writing made me feel as if I was watching a live-action episode due to how the scenes played out. The first issue had humor, romance, heartbreak, and more.

You can actually listen to songs by Lauren’s band Nipslip. Grace (who wrote the lyrics) said new songs will be released monthly. As someone who likes writing lyrics of the songs featured in my books, this made me enjoy this series even more.

If you’re looking for a new slice of life comic book which includes queer characters, you should consider checking out Getting It Together issue 1.

Frankly, after the disaster that was Marauders issue 13, reading such a story really helped. I should have picked up this comic book on Wednesday!

Released on October 7, 2020, feel free to leave us your thoughts if you’ve already read it.
