Iyanu 2×03 Review: “The Offer”

Team Chosen gains some new abilities as Iyanu finally comes face-to-face with Queen Adura in “The Offer.”
Though the tension between Iyanu (Serah Johnson) and the rest of Team Chosen from the season’s first two episodes is still present, “The Offer” allows the group to start the process of resolving things as they prepare to face Queen Adura (Faith Gesiere-Agua) and the People of the Deep.
Iyanu apologizes to Biyi (Okey Jude) for her absence, but Biyi ends up being distracted by the glowing beads provided by Mama Sewa. The beads, activated by the reactivations of the area’s ancient technologies, give Biyi some abilities of his own. His excitement over his new abilities causes him to lose control, and Iyanu must calm him down. It’s exciting to see Biyi get new abilities, though it’s hard not to feel bad for Toye (Samuel Kugbiyi) as now the only member of Team Chosen who doesn’t have any abilities.
Back in Elu, the city discusses how to deal with the growing threat of a potential invasion by the People of the Deep. Kanfo (Blossom Chukwujekwu) begins to test potential recruits to investigate the potential threat. Despite the seriousness of the possible danger, the subplot is one of the more humorous parts of the episode, particularly between Kanfo’s reactions to the recruits and repeated jokes about the awful job of cleaning up after all the corrupted animals.
As Biyi struggles to control his newfound abilities, he shares heartfelt moments with both Iyanu and Olori (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) as they try to impart their own advice. While Iyanu reminds him of how much she initially struggled in her training, Olori encourages him to figure out his purpose. Biyi is still struggling with his grief over Mama Sewa’s death, and clearly both he and Iyanu need to deal with their emotions to gain stronger control over their respective abilities.
Team Chosen soon finds itself face-to-face with the People of the Deep. Adura taunts Olori about leaving the People of the Deep years ago, and Iyanu about her inability to stop the People of the Deep’s massacre of the Riverlands. Despite Olori and Toye’s pleas, Iyanu is eager to face Adura, while Biyi wants revenge for Mama Sewa’s death.
With Iyanu accepting Adura’s challenge at the end of “The Offer,” their impending duel will be thrilling and likely challenging for Iyanu to ultimately prevail.
