My Adventures with Superman 3×03 and 3×04 Review: “All’s Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S.” and “Guess Who’s Slammin’ to Dinner?”

My Adventures with Superman season 3 episode 3, titled ‘All’s Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S.’ and episode 4, titled ‘Guess Who’s Slammin’ to Dinner?’, did an amazing job of expanding the show’s character roster while progressing the main storyline.

One of the things I had been looking forward to, especially after watching the opening theme for My Adventures with Superman season 3, was the introduction of Superboy to the current narrative. Judging from the opening video, you could assume that the writers were going to take the Jon Kent route instead of the traditional Superboy route with the character Conner Kent. And you know what, having watched ‘Guess Who’s Slammin’ to Dinner?’, Jon Kent did work a lot better than Conner Kent could have.

But before I start talking more about Jon, I have to share my opinions on episode 3, ‘All’s Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S’.

With the debut episode of My Adventures with Superman season 3 having Jimmy tell Kara that it would be better for her to explore Earth and interact with more people instead of being “stuck” in a romantic relationship with Jimmy, ‘All’s Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S.’ continued with their relationship drama. And while I can’t help but roll my eyes at forced relationship drama, I have to say how impressed I was with how the writers managed to keep me interested in what’s happening between Kara and Jimmy, mainly because of handling their dynamic in a comedic manner instead of something melodramatic.

Due to Kara making a national announcement for eligible Earth suitors to shoot their shot with her in episode 2, ‘All Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S.’ had Lois accompany Kara to gain some much-needed Earth-focused experiences. Considering her past, it would benefit Kara to have hobbies, a favorite movie, food, and more.

I liked how helping Kara also proved advantageous for Lois. The young investigator had been juggling her conflicting feelings concerning Clark’s plans for their future together. There was no doubt that Lois wanted what Clark did. But he was moving faster than Lois was comfortable with. And hey, I can’t blame Clark. He’s an alien from a lost planet and civilization. Of course, he would want to jump to the version of him being married and starting his own family, especially after realizing how quickly Earth and humanity could come to an end due to an extraterrestrial threat.

Having said that, I also couldn’t blame Lois for feeling stressed. Yes, she wanted to marry Clark and start a family, too. But again, Clark needed to slow down a bit. As far as Lois was concerned, the two needed to enjoy the “present” more instead of immediately beginning a new chapter in their lives.

Also, it was interesting to see such media showing a male character being all about achieving traditional domesticity while his romantic partner wasn’t there yet. Also, kudos to the writers for having Clark and Lois have an actual conversation about where they were and how to move forward together. We all know that Clark and Lois are endgame. So, there’s no need to add unnecessary relationship drama. And I’m glad the writers didn’t try to subvert expectations via poor writing (gag!).

As for Jimmy, he got invited to find “scientific romance” by participating in the W.O.R.M.S. research and app created by Zazzala and her girlfriend Tazzala. That’s where Jimmy met a woman named Doris. I mean, I had no idea that the show would introduce someone like Gigantica through a date set up by a matchmaking company, but I’m here for it. I liked how Gigantica was interested in Jimmy’s “body” due to his many adventures with Superman (get it?), including being exposed to Kryptonite and alien tech. Of course, it wasn’t going to work between the two, but it was still an interesting take on the character, with the writers not being able to introduce Wonder Woman… yet.

‘All Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S’ concluded with a look at a tragic future where Jon’s sent back to the past to prevent such a travesty. So, yeah, the fan theory of this show’s Superboy being Jon was proven right. Yay!

My Adventures with Superman has always featured an anime-esque quality to it. That’s why having Jon give off Trunks vibes from the iconic Dragon Ball IP worked. I really liked how Jon was very open to Clark and Lois about who he was, instead of trying to keep his true identity a secret. The traditional rules of messing with the timeline by sharing information about the future? Well, they don’t apply to a show like My Adventures with Superman because, fortunately, the writers wanted the audience to have fun seeing Jon bond with the younger versions of his parents, Aunt Kara, and Uncle Jimmy. And I’m here for it!

Understandably, Jon’s presence didn’t help matters with Lois, who recently had a conversation with Clark about their future together. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing at how excited Clark was to see Jon and how weirded-out Lois was. The future was indeed coming for her, and she needed to brace herself for it. There are just some things you have to be open to accepting when coupling up with a hero like Superman. Lois needed to get with the program.

Jon was a good mix of Clark and Lois. He got his father’s powers along with Lois’s mannerisms, including being a very impressive pickpocket. And yes, Jon was all about helping those in need and learning how to become a better hero by following Clark’s advice.

The introduction of the Subterranosauri felt a bit random, but I think it was a way for the writers to give humans some allies as things continued to escalate due to what Cyborg Superman/Hank Henshaw was up to. With Jon sticking around in the present to prevent his version of the future from happening, where both Clark and Lois were dead, I’m very interested in seeing how Jon will interact with Hank Henshaw, who was the main player responsible for Jon’s future.

With Lex being taken down a couple of notches due to Hank breaking out of Lex’s control by exploiting Lex’s huge ego, you can tell that Lex will play a role in the good guys standing against Hank. The future Lex was responsible for sending Jon to the past. So, I’m also looking forward to how Jon will interact with the current version of Lex, who wasn’t the biggest fan of Clark or any alien for that matter.

So, yeah, the creative team behind My Adventures with Superman just knows the perfect formula to keep me engaged in a freaking Superman story. There’s so much that can happen in the remaining 6 episodes, and I can’t wait to be entertained!
