The cast for the female-led Ocean’s 11 spin-off, titled Ocean’s 8, has been announced, and it does look like a very promising project.
We first talked about the upcoming spin-off last year. It only had Oscar winner Sandra Bullock attached to it at the time. With the Ocean’s 8 project looking at an October shooting date in New York, the cast has been announced.
Ocean’s 8, along with Sandra Bullock, will star Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, and Awkwafina. For those of you who might not know about Awkwafina, it is the stage name of Asian-American rapper and actress Nora Lum.
The film will be directed by Steven Soderbergh, who also directed Ocean’s Eleven. The script was written by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) and Olivia Milch. The original trilogy went on to gross $1.12 billion worldwide, so it will be interesting to see if the female-led spin-off will be able to achieve the same kind of success.
I was curious about the diversity in the Ocean’s 8 the last time I talked about it. However, the current cast looks very diverse to me. Now, let’s see if the female characters are complex or not. The Ghostbusters reboot did an amazing job when it came to fleshing out the female characters and focusing on the relationship between them. I’m looking forward to seeing Ocean’s 8 following a similar track.
As far as the actresses are concerned, I have no idea about Nora Lum’s and Rihanna’s acting skills. Will they be able to hold their own in front of the talented Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, and Cate Blanchett? We’ll have to wait for the film to be released in order to find out.
The plot of the film will reportedly focus on a heist that takes place during New York’s Met Gala.
