The Orchard Releasing Miguel Arteta’s Female-Centric Queer Film “Duck Butter” On April 27th
Mark your calendars if you’ve been wanting to watch a new queer female-centric comedy film! The Orchard will be releasing Duck Butter in NY/LA on April 27, 2018, followed by a nationwide digital platform release on May 1st!
While seeing the pain members of the LGBTQIA+ community go through make for powerful stories, it’s also important to create queer films that aren’t sad or depressing. That’s why I’m looking forward to Duck Butter, which will premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival on April 20th. A limited theatrical release will follow on April 27th.
Here’s the official synopsis:
When Naima (Alia Shawkat, “Search Party”) and Sergio (Laia Costa, Victoria ) meet at a club, they hit it off instantly, connecting over their disdain for the dishonesty they have experienced in their respective romantic relationships. High on their fast chemistry, the two women concoct a romantic experiment: They plan to spend the next 24 hours together, having sex on the hour. Above all, they commit to perfect honesty with each other, a theoretical remedy to the deceit they believe to be an element of modern relationships. But their relationship in a vacuum doesn’t go as planned, and soon the weight of their commitment begins to close in, threatening the ideals of the daylong experiment and their chances for a romantic future tomorrow.
The latest film from Miguel Arteta, the director behind Beatriz at Dinner, The Good Girl and Chuck & Buck, Duck Butter is a blistering look at intimacy in a pressure cooker. Co-written by Shawkat and executive produced by the Duplass Brothers, the film offers a searing interrogation of modern romance, with all its dizzying highs and heartbreaking betrayals, all packed into an intense 24 hours.

Seeing Kumail Nanjiani in the trailer was a pleasant surprise for me. He’s been quite vocal about his support for the queer community, and it’s good seeing him in such projects. Kumail will soon appear on the currently airing RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10 as a guest judge. He’s also working on creating a My Beautiful Laundrette TV series.
Duck Butter has an approximate running time of 93 minutes. It was directed by Miguel Arteta, who also wrote the screenplay with Alia Shawkat. The film was produced by Mel Eslyn, Natalie Qasabian. Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass serve as executive producers.
Other female-centric queer films you can look forward to this April include Charlize Theron’s Tully, and Disobedience starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams.
The Orchard will also be releasing Halle Berry and Daniel Craig starrer Kings on April 27, 2018.
