SPY x FAMILY Season 2, Film Get Release Dates

Spy x Family Code White

AnimeJapan is this weekend, and news is pouring in. Want to know what I’m excited about? The next season of SPY x FAMILY! Season 2 was announced back in December at Jump Festa, along with a highly-anticipated original film. Both of these are set to debut in 2023, and now we finally have premiere dates!

At a stage presentation for the franchise, it was announced that the second season of the anime will premiere in October of this year. Fans who enjoy the more “spy” side of SPY x FAMILY can look forward to one of the upcoming arcs, which puts more focus on Yor’s secret side job.

The event also revealed the premiere date for the series’ first theatrical film. Gekijōban SPY×FAMILY: Code White will open on December 22. A promotional image for the film was also released. (A winter story! Does that mean that we’ll get a Forger Family Christmas scene?)

It’s a little odd to release a film while in the middle of a season, but the good news is that the film is a brand-new original story. That means that, while creator Tatsuya Endō is supervising the film, along with being credited for the original work and character designs, it won’t spoil anything happening in the series, as it isn’t based on the manga. It’s a separate side story.

I, for one, am very excited by this. Even with its secret agent plot, SPY x FAMILY has a slice-of-life format. Occasionally there are multi-chapter arcs (in additional to the overall arc that is Operation Strix), but for the most part all we see are vignettes – moments in these characters’ lives. So I like the idea that they’re coming up with something new for the film, rather than adapting existing content.

At the same time, it isn’t like other franchises with films that have original stories completely detached from the main plot (like My Hero Academia). With slice-of-life stories, a side plot in a film slots into canon rather than existing on its own.

Hopefully, we can count on Crunchyroll to stream the film. I also have my fingers crossed for a US theatrical release. SPY x FAMILY is very popular over here!

WIT Studio and CloverWorks will be back both for season 2 and the film, which has a lot of fans excited. Season 1 was really well done, and keeping the same animation studio hopefully means that we’ll get the same quality and care with the new projects. (Several of the guys from WIT Studio were at Anime NYC last year, and it’s very clear that they all love this show there. That’s always a good thing.)

I’m very curious to hear people’s theories about the plot of the film based on the poster! Will it be Operation Strix focused? Or will it lean more towards Loid’s or Yor’s work?
