Storm Leads “Maximum X-Men” in the Aftermath of the Armageddon Event – SDCC 2026

Revealed during SDCC 2026, fans of Storm, like myself, can look forward to seeing the Omega-Level Weather Goddess leading a team of mutants when Maximum X-Men debuts on December 2nd of this year.
By writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel, the ongoing Maximum X-Men comic book series was revealed during the Marvel Comics: Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Writer Chip Zdarsky shared information about what Marvel fans should get ready for once the dust settles after the major events that will occur during Zdarsky’s Avengers: Armageddon storyline.
While the Avengers will, of course, try to regroup after ‘Armageddon’, Ororo will be seen leading a new team of X-Men to serve as the protectors of Earth (and beyond). Storm’s team will include Wolverine, Iceman, Psylocke (Betsy), Bishop, Colossus, Firestar, and Justice. And the team’s first threat will be none other than an inter-dimensional invasion from the Negative Zone! Is Annihilus behind the relentless attacks “or something “far, far worse?”
Yost shared, “I’ve worked on my fair share of X-Books over the years, but MAXIMUM X-MEN is everything I love about comics rolled into one— it’s underdog heroes saving the world from the biggest Avengers-level threats imaginable, it’s mind-breaking action and drama and everything people expect from X-Men, all with a classic Claremont vibe. Rolling MAXIMUM X-MEN out as part of the new world post-Armageddon only lets us spotlight the need for a story like this… and to top it all off, I get to work with legendary artist Tony Daniel. As a lifelong X-Men fan, it doesn’t get any better!”
Daniel added, “The X-Men have long been my favorite characters since discovering GIANT SIZE X-MEN (1975) #1 in the fourth grade. I’ve always dreamed of working on my favorite characters, so it’s an incredible honor to launch MAXIMUM X-MEN with Chris. I’ve been a fan of Chris’s writing for a long time, but this is our first time joining forces. I’m already in love with the story in the first issue. Its vibe and energy reminds me so much of the kind of X-Men stories I loved as a child and I can’t wait for the audience to see what we have in store.”
I have been hoping for news about another Storm-centric story ever since Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant by writer Murewa Ayodele concluded in June. Yes, we have Storm leading the team in the currently ongoing X-Men: Outback by writer Steve Orlando. But that particular tale is set in the past. I want Storm-centric moments in the present.
Another reason I’m excited about Maximum X-Men is because of Yost. He wrote the fan-favorite X-Men: Worlds Apart miniseries (2008), which featured some serious power-ups for Ororo. Not only did Yost have Storm strike down the X-Jet while being countries away, but he also had her stop Cyclops’ eyebeam with a freaking lightning blast. There was also an amazing panel where Ororo controlled all of the air in her vicinity to let the soldiers know they would breathe only when she allowed it. Good stuff. And with what Ayodele has done with Storm in his book, I’m looking forward to seeing how Yost will build on that.
