It’s official. The live-action Superman & Lois TV series has been finally renewed by The CW. However, the upcoming installment will see budget cuts and a smaller episode order.

Fans have been anxiously waiting for news regarding a season four renewal for Superman & Lois amidst the bunch of cancellations occurring at The CW due to the changes being made to the network’s business model under new ownership. And while the budget constraint for such a superhero show is unfortunate, at least the fandom can look forward to enjoying another season of the last remaining DC comic book-inspired series on The CW soon enough. Yes, Gotham Knights has been canceled after just one season.

Due to the budget cuts, the episode number has been shortened to only 10 episodes. In comparison, the first two seasons ran for 15 episodes each. And season 3 got 13 episodes.

Furthermore, Deadline has reported that the fourth season will see a change in series regulars. Superman & Lois has 12 series regulars. That particular number will be decreased. While the leads won’t likely be affected, the supporting cast members will feel the impact. We should get to learn about any developments quite quickly as the cast options are set to expire this week.

While I feel bad about said change, I think that considering the fourth season will likely be the show’s final one, it would make sense to focus more on the Kent family dynamic.

According to Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment, The CW Network, Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming (which has been renewed for a third season) are two of the strongest performers for the network across linear and digital platforms.

However, while the ratings for the two shows are comparable, Superman & Lois is a more expensive series to make. So, the budget cuts aren’t necessarily a huge surprise. In contrast, All American: Homecoming got a 13-episode order for the third season.

Debuting back in February 2021, the third season of Superman & Lois will air the finale on June 27, 2023, to bring the total episode count to 43. I don’t know when the fourth season will go into production due to the current WGA Strike. But, at least, the series got a renewal.

While fans wait, they can consider supporting the new animated series My Adventures with Superman which will premiere on Adult Swim come July 6, 2023.

Are you looking forward to watching Superman & Lois season 4?

    1. Yup. I get that certain regulars will be pushed back to recurring etc… but due to it being the fourth and final season for Superman and Lois… I’m here for more focus being put on the Kents.
