The Muppets Mayhem Cast and Crew at NYCC 2022
I knew absolutely nothing about the upcoming Disney+ series The Muppets Mayhem when I added it to my New York Comic Con schedule. Honestly, I don’t really need to know anything! It’s a Muppet show, I’m absolutely going to watch. The fact that it’s focused on the Electric Mayhem is just an added bonus.
But now that I do know more about the show, I’m really excited for it. Starring Lilly Singh as Nora, an aspiring music executive, The Muppets Mayhem is about the struggle the Electric Mayhem undergo as they try to cut their very first album. (Can you believe that in the almost 70-year history of the Muppets that the Mayhem have never had an album? That’s about to change!)
The panel for the series, which kicked off the final day of NYCC for me, also included stars Saara Chaudry (playing Nora’s sister, Hannah), Anders Holm (playing Nora’s ex-boyfriend, JJ), and Tahj Mowry (number one Mayhem fan Moog), plus co-creators and executive producers Adam F. Goldberg, Jeff Yorkes, and Bill Barretta (who also stars as Mayhem frontman Dr. Teeth).
The impetus for the creation of the series was a concert that the Electric Mayhem had a few years ago. Bill thought they would have a relatively small audience, and they ended up playing for almost 30,000 people. That’s when he realized that there might be something there. When he tried to pitch the idea, he was told he should meet with Adam and Jeff, who were in the process of trying to pitch a Muppets series as well.
As the show is centered around the band, it will contain songs – both original songs and covers. It will also feature the band members getting into social media, helped along by Hannah, a social media influencer. And, in true Muppets fashion, you can expect a lot of cameos and some fourth wall breaks. Though they admit that they wanted this to be very much set in the real world, so there won’t be many (if any) “fork in the road” jokes.
I was fortunate enough to be in the press room for The Muppets Mayhem and get the chance to talk to the cast and crew. You can listen to our interviews from the press room below:
The Muppets Mayhem will be coming to Disney+ sometime in 2023.
