Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake season 2 premieres tomorrow, October 23, and the cast made an appearance at this year’s New York Comic Con to talk about the upcoming season.

A spin-off of the popular fan favorite series Adventure Time, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake follows the adventures of the titular Fionna and Cake, gender-swapped versions of Finn and Jake who existed in a universe inside Ice King’s mind. (Also, Cake is a cat.) The characters made several appearances in the original Adventure Time before getting their own series, the second season of which premieres tomorrow.

While the first season featured a lot of multi-verse hopping, season 2 gives us a more settled Fionna, who is trying her very best to be better. She’s working hard at being responsible and helping her friends. But this is Adventure Time, so that kind of stability isn’t going to last long.

Season 2 will run parallel stories which naturally intersect at one point. One follows Fionna as she tries to help her friends open a bakery. One follows Huntress Wizard, who is investigating a mysterious illness that Finn has contracted. And Simon is somewhere in there, of course. The season will also explore the connection between Fionna and Finn.

Warner Bros. Animation hosted a panel at NYCC on Sunday, October 12, which screened the first episode of the new season and featured a moderated discussion with the cast.

I had actually never seen an episode of Adventure Time before, though I was aware of it. It’s hard to be chronically online and not have stumbled across anything about the series. Watching the season 2 premiere inspired me to watch the original series, which I did almost as soon as I got home from NYCC. The episode serves as a great introduction to the concurrent storylines of the season and gives you just enough of a hook to get you excited for what’s coming.

Showrunner and executive producer Adam Muto was in the press room, along with cast members Madeleine Martin (Fionna), Roz Ryan (Cake), and Ashly Burch (Huntress Wizard).
