The “Shadow and Bone” Season 2 Trailer is Here and It is GLORIOUS
The trailer for season 2 of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone is here and I am so excited, I literally cannot contain myself. I was watching with my hands over my mouth the entire time. This is going to be amazing, y’all.
Season 2 of Shadow and Bone will likely pick up from where the first season left off, probably with a bit of a time skip. Alina and Mal have fled Ravka after presumably killing Kirigan, who of course wasn’t ever really dead. Kaz, Jesper, and Inej have returned to Ketterdam, where they have to deal with the fallout of failing to acquire the Sun Summoner. Matthias is in prison.
It was revealed in an interview with the showrunners back in December that season 2 would not only adapt Siege and Storm – the second book in best-selling author Leigh Bardugo’s original Grishaverse trilogy – but also incorporate aspects of the final book, Ruin and Rising. It was also indicated that they would bring in elements from other books in the universe (of which there are many), but it’s anyone’s guess what they’ll touch on and how it will fit in.
I found myself wondering what aspects those might be, and the trailer makes it pretty clear that the hunt for the legendary beasts will take place in its entirety. (One beast is hunted in the second book, and one in the third.) The motivation for the hunt also seems to have been altered to fit the changes made in adapting the book. In the books, it was Kirigan who initially led the hunt for the Sea Whip. In the show, it looks as though Alina makes that decision for herself. (Well, with a little prodding from Nikolai.)
I do hope that they aren’t trying to condense the last two books into one season. There is a lot that happens, especially in the final book, and I worry that trying to condense the story will result in something rushed, or something that leaves a lot out. I do think that it’s possible to bring parts of Ruin and Rising into Siege and Storm (like the search for the amplifiers), but that it wouldn’t work trying to bring everything. We’ll just have to hope that the series is renewed for a third season. (Or that the Crows get their rumored spinoff. I want to see the Ice Court heist.)
A major source of speculation has been how the Crows will factor into the plot for season 2. As many of you may know, the Crows were introduced much earlier in the series than they were in the books. Their plot in season 1 was invented for the show as a way to bring them into the main story. Their role in season 2 will likely continue with their plot from season 1 (the job they failed), but it also looks as though they’ll once again be incorporated into the main arc, rather than a completely separate story.
We’ve gotten brief shots of Zoya, Nina, Matthias, Genya, David, Nadia, Tolya, Tamar, and Wylan. (Wylan! He was there for like 2 seconds and I love him so much.) I didn’t notice Fedyor in the trailer, and we still don’t know if Ivan survived the attack at the end of the first season. (He does in the books, but who knows where they’ll take this story.)
Shadow and Bone season 2 premieres on Netflix on March 16.
What are you most excited about for season 2? Which new character are you most looking forward to meeting? What do you hope will happen?
