Enter the Shadow Fold in the New “Shadow and Bone” Trailer
First, we got a teaser trailer, which did what it’s supposed to and focused mainly on Morozova’s Stag, only giving us a brief glimpse of the Sun Summoner, Alina Starkov. Then, we got character posters and a few stills showing our favorite characters in action. Now, we have been granted with a glorious Shadow and Bone trailer, which shows us the Shadow Fold for the first time. And, wow, is it intimidating.
Netflix released the Shadow and Bone trailer earlier today at IGN’s Fan Fest 2021, on a panel with the cast and crew. It was the first public promotional appearance for the cast, with previous panels – such as the one from last October’s NYCC Metaverse – consisting only of Leigh Bardugo, author of the best-selling books on which the show is based, and showrunner Eric Heisserer. IGN’s panel introduced cast members Jessie Mei Li (Alina), Archie Renaux (Mal), Freddy Carter (Kaz), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper) and Ben Barnes (General Kirigan) to the world.
The Shadow Fold, also known as “The Unsea”, is a major antagonist of Barduo’s Grisha trilogy. It is a section of nearly impenetrable darkness that cuts across the country of Ravka. A malevolent force full of demon-like volcra and other horrible creatures, the Fold grows larger every year and cuts off Ravka’s capitol, Os Alta, from the poorer cities along the coast. Traveling across the Fold is extremely dangerous.
In the brand new Shadow and Bone trailer, we not only get our first look at the Shadow Fold, we also get to witness the revelation of Alina’s abilities.
Netflix has also released a bunch of new stills from season 1, featuring some new characters that we haven’t gotten a look at before (OK mostly just Genya).
The synopsis, according to Netflix:
Based on Leigh Bardugo’s worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.
The first season of Shadow and Bone consists of eight one-hour episodes and debuts on Netflix on April 23, 2021.
