“Terminator” Anime Series In Early Stages of Development at Netflix!
A Terminator anime series is headed to Netflix. With how the Terminator franchise has been struggling to continue, here’s to hoping the upcoming animated content gives it a boost.
The Terminator anime series is currently in its early stages. While no details about the plot were shared during the announcement, as a fan of the franchise, I’m excited. I might not like every installment in the series (who does? Ha!), but I like the property as a whole.
Netflix has partnered with Skydance on the upcoming anime series. Skydance was involved in the production of the last two Terminator films. So, that’s… well, frankly, that’s concerning.
The first-ever animated adaptation in the franchise is being produced in partnership with Production I.G (Netflix has had a production line deal with them since 2018). Production I.G has worked on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, B: The Beginning, and Eden of the East.
Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, The Batman) will serve as Showrunner and Executive Producer.
“Terminator’ is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time,” shared John Derderian, Netflix’s vice president of Japan and anime. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”
Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, President, and CEO of Production I.G said, “I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was “Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?” At that instant, I was confident we should get on board. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”
I love the enthusiasm. Fingers crossed the creative team is able to deliver.
Terminator: Dark Fate was a mess. So, maybe an episodic small-screen or streaming adaptation is exactly what the franchise needs?
The Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series was well-received by many fans. I still think TPTB should bring back a similar story.
I’ll keep an eye on the Terminator anime. I wouldn’t be surprised if it introduces some main players of Asian descent in the lore. Let’s see what happens.
