It’s been 84 years, but we finally have a trailer for The Old Guard 2. (No, I will never tire of that joke.) Everyone’s favorite immortals are back, and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us.

In the three months since the premiere date was announced, all the way back in January, I’ve been wondering about the plot of The Old Guard 2, and whether or not it would at all follow established comic book canon. Now that the trailer has dropped, I can categorically say that, nope. We’re in uncharted territory here, everyone.

Of course, that’s to be expected, since in the comics, Andy does not lose her immortality. And now that Andy has lost her immortality, she has a lot of questions. Answers for those questions may be found with an old friend, but first they have to contend with a new villain who seems determined to bring her and the others down.

There is at least one constant, though, and that’s the return of Quynh (Noriko in the comics), which was teased at the end of the first film. Quynh is out for revenge after having been trapped in an underwater coffin for centuries, and Andy is the subject of her vengeance.

I’m intrigued about the possibility of answers to their questions about immortality. In the comics, it’s just sort of a given, and no one knows anything. Original creator Greg Rucka is back to write the screenplay, so I’d wager we can take any of the information in the film as canon. After all, there is still a planned third volume of the comics for which precious little is known.

Hopefully we’ll get plenty of scenes between immortal husbands Joe and Nicky, though I fear nothing will top Joe’s speech in the van from the first film (which is almost word-for-word from the comics). But it looks like the emotional core of the second film is the relationship between Andy and Quynh. (Good. We need more ladies loving ladies on Netflix, which has a bad habit of canceling wlw shows. Don’t take this away from us, Netflix.)

The entire cast of the first film is back, joined by Uma Thurman and Henry Golding, and this story looks tense as all get out. There are enough death knells in the trailer to have me worried about legitimately everyone. But I’m ridiculously excited to see a fight between Thurman and Charlize Theron. That will be epic beyond belief.

That said, Andy being the “first” was a big part of her character, so I’m not sure how much I like this change. Rucka being involved gives me some hope that it won’t be completely botched, but it seems like a very predictable move.

The Old Guard 2 will premiere on Netflix on July 2, 2025.
