I thought this day would never come. I thought we were imagining it. Nearly five years after the first film hit Netflix, The Old Guard 2 finally has a release date. And it’s actually this year.

That’s right, everyone. The Old Guard 2 will drop on Netflix July 2, 2025. That’s in less than six months! And the announcement was accompanied by a short behind-the-scenes video of filming (which was allegedly completed all the way back in 2022).

The release date was confirmed in a post on Netflix’s official Twitter account, as the video only says “coming soon”.

The Old Guard is based on a series of comics created by Greg Rucka (who wrote the screenplay for both films) and Leandro Fernández. The first film was based on the first volume, The Old Guard: Opening Fire, with some minor changes. I had presumed that the second film would follow the plot of the next volume, Force Multiplied. But it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not we’ll get an adaptation or an original story. It’s also possible that Rucka may have drawn inspiration from the third, as yet unreleased volume.

Due to the changes made in the jump from page to screen, I think if they do adapt the second volume, it will be a very different story. Not to spoil a 7-year-old graphic novel, but in the source material, Andy does not lose her immortality. So her attitude and her actions would be entirely different. I think that makes a straight adaptation unlikely, unless those themes were going to be explored in the third volume (if it ever comes out).

I’m sure we’ll learn more about the plot as we get closer to the release date, but one major thing I’m hoping for is to see the relationship between Andy and Quynh (Noriko in the comics). Don’t get me wrong, I love Joe and Nicky as well, but we didn’t get much of Andy/Quynh in the first film, and the second volume of the comics focuses a lot on their relationship. So I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Consider me seated and ready. You’d better believe I’m staying up late so that I can watch this as soon as it drops. It feels like it’s been 84 years.
