Everyone’s favorite Straw Hat pirates are back and now in living color! Netflix’s One Piece has set sail and is a fun and exciting journey. For a long time there’s been an unspoken stereotype that Black fans of anime and manga are few and far between. This couldn’t be further from the truth and because of BIPOC people sharing their love for the art, we’re starting to see more diversity brought to the forefront of anime.

The new Netflix live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s series turns One Piece into a hyper-real spectacle that is a delight for the eyes. If you’re not familiar with One Piece, it’s the story of a young would-be Pirate King, Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) who is trying to assemble a crew named after his beloved Straw Hats to go search out the One Piece.

I had the pleasure of attending a fan screening at Anime Bar in Houston and talking to amazing fans of color about their experience and love for anime. There were so many and it was truly awesome to see.

We spoke to TJ and Selah. TJ was a true hard fan and really hopeful the screening would ignite Selah’s love. I think it worked! Selah can be found @selahry and TJ @tontallini, both on Instagram.

You’ll also see a video with Leroy who was excited to talk to us about what the One Piece manga and series meant to him. He’s a true fan and was so fun to talk to. Leroy can be found @randolphroy on IG.

Here’s a video featuring the fan interviews as well as some footage from the event.

Released on August 31, 2023, the first season of One Piece (consisting of 8 episodes) is streaming now on Netflix. It has already been picked up for season 2!

Be sure to watch and continue to support the writer’s and actor’s strikes so they can get back to work on this amazing series.
