This Just In: “The Ex-Morning” Is Coming

Another highly-anticipated Thai BL premiering in May, the trailer for the second-chance romcom The Ex-Morning dropped earlier today. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this show because it features the return of one of the original pairs, Krist Perawat and Singto Prachaya.

Krist and Singto helped popularize the genre with 2016’s Sotus. They returned for the sequel series, SOTUS S, and reprised their characters again in a one-episode stint in the first Our Skyy anthology. But they haven’t been in a series together since 2020’s (non-BL but with BL pairings) I’m Tee, Me Too, and when Singto left GMMTV in 2021, it seemed that they never would again.

However, when Singto returned to GMMTV in 2024, fans were hopeful for a reunion, and they got their wish when the pilot trailer for The Ex-Morning debuted in GMMTV’s “Up and Above” presentation.

Now, I’ve never seen Sotus, as I’ve only gotten into Thai BLs in the past few years and there are just too many series on my watchlist. So I’m not as attached to KristSingto as the long-time BL fans. I’m looking forward to The Ex-Morning for a different reason: they’re adults with jobs

The BL audience in Thailand skews younger, which is why so many series are set in high school or college. In the past several years, there have been some excellent series that star older characters, like Moonlight Chicken and Spare Me Your Mercy, but for the most part those aren’t very common. At least from GMMTV.

So a series like The Ex-Morning is a rare treat for fans like me, who are older than the general audience. Krist is 29 and Singto is 30, and it’s honestly refreshing to see actors play characters their actual age. I’m hoping that as the audience ages and as Thai BL gains more of a worldwide audience, the industry shifts to match the changing demographics. That is, we get more series with adult characters, who have careers and more complex problems.

Something else that makes me excited is the premise. This is the first BL that I can think of that centers around exes. Usually when a show is about a second chance, it’s one character finding love with a new partner, like with Jim and Wen in Moonlight Chicken. If the ex makes an appearance, it’s usually just to stir up drama between the main pairing, and they only stick around for an episode or two. (Or, in the case of Moonlight Chicken again, they get their own love interest.)

I can’t wait to see a show with this dynamic, because it’s such a departure from the normal BL fare. I love seeing GMMTV branch out with more varied storylines. It’s honestly such a great time to be a Thai BL fan. We’re being seriously fed.

The Ex-Morning premieres May 22 and will be 10 episodes total.
