Trailer for Netflix’s Dark Comedy Miniseries “Sirens” Has Me Hooked!

Netflix has released the trailer for an upcoming dark comedy miniseries titled Sirens that stars Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, and Kevin Bacon. The five-episode series will premiere come May 22, 2025.
The story is set over Labor Day weekend. Sirens has Devon (Fahy) making her way to a lavish island where her sister Simone (Alcock) happens to work for a very rich socialite named Michaela Kell (Moore). However, it becomes quickly clear to Devon that something isn’t right. Even though Simone’s supposed to be Michaela’s personal assistant, their so-called professional relationship is a bit too close. Not only that, but Simone wants nothing to do with Devon. Apparantly, the younger sister only sent over a gift basket after learning about their father being diagnosed with early-onset dementia. The trailer shows Devon trying to protect Simone as Michaela continues to influence her young assistant and others around her.
Talking more about the characters, Michaela is a philanthropist and animal activist. She’s married to billionaire Peter Kell (Bacon), who is an avid outdoorsman and likes an occasional joint.
Glenn Howerton plays Ethan Corbin III. He’s a lifelong bachelor who lives next door and is a dear friend of the Kells. Ethan’s been burning through his trust fund.
Jose is played by Felix Solis, who appears to be a humble gardener but is Peter’s right-hand man. He’s the head of security and manages the estate’s surveillance system.
Simone and Devon’s father is played by Bill Camp as Bruce DeWitt. A Navy veteran, Bruce doesn’t want to become a burden on his daughters after learning about his diagnosis.
The rest of the cast includes Josh Segarra as Devon’s on-and-off toxic boyfriend Raymond; Trevor Slater as Jordan, the captain of Ethan’s yacht; Britne Oldford as Missy, who hates her job as a seasonal housekeeper; Lauren Weedman as Patrice, the Kells’ longtime personal chef; and a trio called “The Fates” made of Jenn Lyon as mean girl Cloe, Erin Neufer as zealot Lisa, and Emily Borromeo as the ditz Astrid. “The Fates” are fiercely devoted to Michaela and want to preserve her work.
The promotional materials state that Sirens has some Greek mythology in it. As of right now, I can’t think of any lore pertaining to an older sibling on a quest to rescue a younger sibling from a cult-like leader. The only link I could think of was how Greek mythology depicts sirens as hybrid beings with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a bird. They were able to lure men to their demise through singing. Michaela’s activism is related to birds, and she does seem to hold power over others. But feel free to share your thoughts about the possible inspiration after watching the highly engrossing trailer.
Sirens is based on the play ‘Elemeno Pea‘ by Molly Smith Metzler (the highly popular Maid for Netflix). Nicole Kassell serves as director and executive producer.
A lot of people are buzzing online about the queer undertones during Simone and Michaela’s interactions in the trailer. We will find out soon enough come May 22,2 2025, if actual queer representation is present in Sirens or if it’s all subtext to tell a certain kind of narrative about power dynamics, wealth, class, and more.
