Attention, Sailor Scouts! Netflix has just announced that it will be premiering the latest installment in the hugely popular Sailor Moon franchise globally on its streaming platform (outside of Japan). Both parts of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie will drop on June 3, 2021.

Created by Naoko Takeuchi and first serialized in Kodansha’s manga magazine ‘Nakayosi’ in December 1991, Sailor Moon and her Sailor Guardians have become a worldwide phenomenon. Between a hit TV series in the 1990s that was broadcast in more than 40 countries and more than 30 million copies of the original manga sold internationally, Sailor Moon is one of those instantly iconic characters that even those who don’t know much about the series will recognize on sight. And now, for the series’ 30th anniversary, the most recent chapter Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie will be available to stream.

“Like so many others around the world, I trace my love for anime back to watching Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon when I was a toddler – pictures of me in Usagi’s Bun Head have become a family treasure. It’s no surprise that these characters and tales about love and justice still touch the hearts of so many fans around the world,” said Ema Hirayama, Manager, Content Acquisition, Netflix. “It’s a dream come true for all of us at Netflix to have Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie join our expansive anime slate and to share this incredible story with fans around the world.”

The film serves as a direct continuation and as a “fourth season” for the Sailor Moon Crystal series. Released on January 8 and February 11, after a four-month delay due to the pandemic, it was the first Sailor Moon film to play in Japanese theaters in 26 years.

“We have long been hoping to bring Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie to people around the world since the initial release in Japan in January and February, 2021,” said Fumio Osano, Editor-in-Chief, Comic IP Development Team at Kodansha (and Naoko Takeuchi’s longtime editor). “Today, we are excited to bring these movies to our fans through Netflix. Amidst these challenging times, it is our greatest pleasure for viewers to feel courage and hope by watching this story about love and justice.”

The film is set in April, and Tokyo is preparing to celebrate the largest Total Solar Eclipse of the century. During the eclipse, Usagi and Chibi-Usa encounter Pegasus, in search of the chosen Maiden who can break the seal of the Golden Crystal. Meanwhile, a mysterious group appears in town, and their nefarious plan involves seizing the Legendary Silver Crystal, ruling over the moon and Earth, and eventually the entire universe.

Based on the ‘Dream Arc’ of the original hit manga series, the story is about the Sailor Guardians’ growth, both as teenage girls and as Sailor Guardians, as well as the faint first love of Chibi-Usa and Helios.
