As a fan of the long-running Tekken games, I’m definitely looking forward to watching the upcoming Tekken: Bloodline animated series on Netflix come August 18, 2022.

From what I could gather, Tekken: Bloodline will take place between Tekken 2 and Tekken 3. As shown in the trailer, the series will feature scenes of a young Jin Kazama training with his mother Jun Kazama. Jun’s death at the hands of the Ogre will lead to Jin agreeing to train with his grandfather Heihachi Mishima to obtain more power to avenge his mother’s death. Not only that, but I also like how the trailer sets Jin’s father Kazuya to be an eventual threat to him.

Along with Jin’s relatives, the animated series will also include other familiar faces including Paul, King, and Nina Williams. Of course, I’m most excited about seeing a young Jin getting to interact with a young Ling Xiaoyu (those two are my OTP) as well as Jin’s frenemy relationship with Hwoarang.

As for the action, I’m a bit disappointed that the trailer didn’t include an action sequence with Xiaoyu. However, we did get a scene where Jin warns her about Nina being a killer. If I were to guess, I think Xiaoyu will face Nina during the King of Iron Fist Tournament. And while Xiaoyu is considered an impressively powerful fighter, due to how young she is in the series (and still has much to learn), I wouldn’t be surprised if Nina wins the battle. But let’s see. I could be wrong.

While I’m still not sold on the animation style yet, especially when it comes to the faces of the characters, I have to say that the hits and combos do look very cool. The animation team really made me remember the in-game combos with the body movements and special effects.

Debuting all the way back in 1994, the Tekken game franchise is very lore heavy. And that’s saying something as it is primarily a fighting game series. So, here’s to hoping the writing team came up with an interesting story even if they will be rehashing certain plotlines fans are quite familiar with.

As for the main storyline, hopefully, we will get a proper Tekken installment soon to build on the events that occurred during 2015’s Tekken 7.
