Webcomic Recommendation: “Bed of Flowers”

Bed of Flowers by RoseNose (translated from German by Bonny) tells a story about human connection and earning forgiveness. A teen boy realizes that it takes more than a verbal apology to repair the damage done to another person.

Bed of Flowers starts with a soccer ball landing on someone’s flower bed. Elia, a soccer player, has accidentally kicked his soccer ball towards the residence of whom his peers call “the witch of the school garden.” The soccer player’s attempt at an apology backfires, and he soon finds that it takes more than a simple “I’m sorry.”

This short webcomic conveys its themes of connection and forgiveness through simple yet effective images. The “witch” (whom readers will later know as Holly) doesn’t accept the soccer player’s first apology, which is valid as the latter had made the mistake of offering a houseplant instead of something that would actually help restore the garden flower bed. Forgiveness isn’t earned by saying “sorry” and offering a consolation prize. It takes effort to repair the damage, and Bed of Flowers does well in communicating that message through subtlety.

What’s interesting about this webcomic is Holly’s name isn’t mentioned until later on. Readers don’t only get to know the name of the “witch” (Holly), but also get hints at her backstory as well. Such a decision can be interpreted in different ways, even though this might be because she’s not just someone who has been wronged. She’s a person who deserves respect and compassion. Finding out about her past motivates Elia to make up for the incident through effort, reflection, and genuine intent.
