“Wuthering Heights” Easily Tops Weekend Box Office Against “GOAT” and “Crime 101”

The box office numbers for the Valentine’s Day and President’s Day Weekend are in, and (as expected) Wuthering Heights debuted in first place, followed by fellow new releases GOAT and Crime 101.

As someone who is a fan of Halle Berry, I had been looking forward to watching the heist film Crime 101. Alongside Berry, the film also stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan. While the fan in me was hoping for it to open at number one, the more realistic side of my brain expected Wuthering Heights to take said spot with ease, especially because of Valentine’s Day. However, what I wasn’t expecting was for Crime 101 to make so little at the box office during the opening weekend. With a reported $90 million production budget, the current 3-day domestic haul of approximatley $14.2 million (the 4-day being around $16.3 million) isn’t a good start.

What’s even more disappointing is that Crime 101 is a well-made and well-acted film. The current Critic Score stands at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Audience Score being 84%. Critics have praised Berry’s performance as well as the cinematography and director Bart Layton’s ability to remind viewers of classic heist movies.

I enjoyed watching Crime 101, even with the 140-minute runtime. Berry did an impressive job in the role of Sharon Combs, an insurance broker who finds herself teaming up with jewel thief Mike (Hemsworth) to get what she thinks she’s rightfully owed, after being continuously overlooked in her professional field due to being an older woman of color.

As of writing this, the global haul for Crime 101 sits at an estimated $29.8 million. Even if it manages to leg it out at the box office, the chances of it turning a profit are slim. Sigh!

It’s been decades since Berry has had a legit hit at the box office. Fortunately, Berry keeps herself busy in Hollywood. So, hopefully, she will have another audience and critic winner soon.

The current numbers also serve as yet another unfortunate reminder that a majority of actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe just don’t have much of a theatrical pull outside their MCU work. Though he has performed well in streaming movies, I don’t think Hemsworth has given a legit hit on his own on the big screen outside of playing Thor.

Coming to Wuthering Heights, it enjoyed an estimated $32.8 million debut over the 3-day window. With a reported production budget of $80 million, the worldwide gross, as of now, stands at around $83 million. The Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi-starrer has a 60% Critic and 80% Audience Score on RT. Being quite the decisive film online, with most fans of the original novel not liking Emerald Fennell’s take, it will be interesting to see how the movie holds going into the second weekend.

Animated film GOAT took second place with approximately $27.2 million (3-day). The global collection is at $51 million against a reported production budget of somewhere in the $80-90 million range. Starring Stranger Things actor Caleb McLaughlin as a teenage Boer goat named Will Harris, the narrative follows Will’s dream of becoming a professional roarball player.

Even though it followed a typical sports movie narrative, GOAT made for a fun time at the theater, especially due to the visuals.

The previously released films showed nice holds, with Send Help only falling an impressive 2.7%. I’m glad this film is getting the attention it deserves. As of yet, the film has grossed over $70 million at the global box office.
