Even though Captain America 4: Brave New World remained atop the box office for a second weekend, the approximately 68% drop and current global haul does raise concerns for the MCU in 2025.

Starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, Captain America: Brave New World had a lot working against it right out the gate, including the controversy concerning the addition of Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph. Debuting in the US on February 14, 2025, the live-action movie was able to open with an estimated $100 million for the recent four-day weekend. However, the Rotten Critic Score on Rotten Tomatoes and the “B-” Audience CinemaScore raised concerns about the movie’s longevity at the box office.

So, yeah, the latest MCU offering saw a drop of around 68% during the second week at the box office. While such drops aren’t unusual for superhero flicks, they aren’t good for movies that didn’t manage to open larger. The sophomore week had the film collect approximately $28.2 million, bringing the current domestic haul to around $141.2 million. As of writing this piece, the global collection stands at almost $289.4 million against a reported budget of $180 million. You can read our review of the film here.

There’s been a lot of finger-pointing online about the movie’s obvious underperformance with people bringing up audiences not showing up to support Mackie as Captain America, poor CGI, boring plot, etc. From where I stand, I feel there were also tons of people who, like me, just aren’t interested in the Captain America side of the MCU no matter how well-written the script is. Frankly, I’m just waiting for the X-Men to properly show up already.

The next MCU offering is Thuderbolts* which will release on May 2, 205. It stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and more. I’m interested in seeing how it will fare at the box office because again there could be people like me who just aren’t into watching this specific cast of characters co-leading a film.

Following that is The Fantastic Four: First Steps come July 25, 2025. As of right now, I’m not interested in watching that one either. I’ve never been a big fan of the FF comic books and my disinterest seems to be impacting the MCU adaptation too.

Coming in at second place is the dark comedy The Monkey by Director Osgood Perkins who also wrote the screenplay based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name. Starring Theo James and Tatiana Maslany, the movie opened to around $14.2 million against a reported production budget of $11 million. So, yeah, that’s a win for the studio.

The Indian historical film Chhaava saw a 50% rise in attendance from last week. It’s based on the life of Sambhaji, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire. The story follows the lead character’s resistance against the Mughal Empire. Adding $2.6 million, the worldwide haul stands around $47 million, with the film being considered a critical and box office hit.
