“The Devil Wears Prada 2” Slays the Weekend Box Office

The much-anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2 hit theatres over the weekend. Fortunately, for fans, the sequel managed to succeed.
Released back in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada went on to become iconic in the movie and pop culture fandom spaces, with the quotes and scenes from the film still being referenced. And while fans have been hoping for a sequel for a very long time, there was a sense of dread when a sequel was confirmed. Hollywood has been busy playing the nostalgia card, and not always with positive results. So, yeah, while the fandom wanted a second chapter, there was also an air of dread about Hollywood quite possibly messing up the original’s legacy with a subpar nostalgia-bait sequel.
However, fortuitously, The Devil Wears Prada 2 managed to sidestep the failure narrative. Directed by David Frankel, the movie opened to a commendable approximate $77 million domestically, with the global haul currently standing at an estimated $234 million. Against a reported production budget of $100 million, the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is well on its way to turning a profit for Disney.
As for my opinions about the movie, I think we all knew it wouldn’t be as iconic as the OG. However, having watched it, I would say that TDWP2 was still an enjoyable return to the world of fashion as Andy (Anne Hathaway) found herself trying to help Miranda (Meryl Streep) keep Runway alive.
I liked the narrative touching on the current state of fashion journalism and the forced interest in AI. It also had some good comedic moments, though, overall, the narrative maintained a serious tone due to the themes.
With how the film concluded and the money it’s making, I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney decides to greenlight The Devil Wears Prada 3. And you know what? I wouldn’t be against it. Trying to find a successor to Miranda might make for an interesting story.
As for the rest of the new arrivals, the Adam Scott-starring horror flick Hokum debuted to an estimated $6.4 million. I haven’t watched it yet, but the trailer did intrigue me.
The animated adaptation of The Animal Farm, directed by Andy Serkis, failed to make a splash with an approximate $3.4 million. The moment I saw the trailer for that movie, I knew I wouldn’t be watching it. Trying to “soften” the sociopolitical narrative depth of The Animal Farm novel, regardless of bringing it to an animated medium, just doesn’t work.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continued to make money, adding an estimated $12.1 million to the domestic weekend, and bringing the worldwide haul to around $894 million. Fans are hoping for it to reach the $1 billion milestone. So, let’s see if it can manage to do so or not.
The Michael biography saw an impressive hold, dropping only about 44% during the second weekend against TDWP2, and collecting an approx. $54 million. Starring Jaafar Jackson, Michael currently sits at $425 million globally. A sequel is allegedly in the works.
