The Talented Kumail Nanjiani Is Developing A “My Beautiful Laundrette” TV Series

The talented comedian Kumail Nanjiani is developing a My Beautiful Laundrette TV series and I want networks to quickly pick it up. Also, if you haven’t yet watched 1985’s My Beautiful Laundrette (starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Gordon Warnecke) what have you been doing with your life?

My Beautiful Laundrette is considered as one of the best queer films ever made. It was released back in 1985 and told the story of a British punk named Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis) reuniting with British Pakistani Omar (Gordon Warnecke), his lover from their teenage years. Considering that Hollywood is still making sad queer films and the Bury Your Gays Trope continues to be present, it’s good to know that this 1985 queer classic decided to give its characters a happy ending. The film also did a good job when it came to tackling issues of race, religion, and sexuality.

Here’s the very old trailer!

I’m glad that Kumail Nanjiani decided to reimagine this film as a TV series. He’s also attached to star as well as co-write the script. Hanif Kureishi, who was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Screenplay category for the film, will be producing the project alongside Alec Berg, the executive producer of Silicon Valley. Stephen Gaghan, the screenwriter of Traffic will serve as producer with ‘Super Deluxe,’ a digital production company. No network has picked up the project yet. So, we’ll probably have to wait a while.

Amazon? Netflix? Hulu? Where you all at? Someone needs to pick this up!

As for Pakistani Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) working on an important queer-centric project, I can’t say I’m surprised. He’s always been open about his support for the queer community and wanting to tell their stories (check out his interview with Gal Gadot). So, it was only a matter of time.

Have you watched My Beautiful Laundrette? Are you excited about the upcoming TV series? Let us know.
