Nightwing Issue 90 Review: “Get Grayson: Act Three”

Nightwing issue 90 continues Dick Grayson’s current storyline after a brief 2-issue team up with Jon Kent in both the Nightwing and Superman: Son of Kal-El series. This time we see Nightwing teamed up with another friend, the Flash! If you need to get out of a dangerous situation fast as Dick Grayson does, there’s no one better for the job!

There will be some spoilers below.

As someone who isn’t super familiar with the Wally West, Flash as a character, I was looking forward to this issue. And it did not disappoint! I’ve really enjoyed seeing Dick interact with so many different characters in Tom Taylor’s run. Bludhaven is Nightwing’s city of course, but that doesn’t mean he always has to operate alone.

Nightwing issue 90 features a ton of action, a huge amount of danger, and plenty of heart. (Not to mention multiple panels of Dick’s sweet little dog, Haley.) As I mentioned earlier, one of the things I have really appreciated about this specific Nightwing run is the expansive cast of characters. Nightwing is often considered the heart of DC Comics, so it only makes sense to see him helping out other heroes and those same heroes being there for him as well. A lot of times crossovers tend to be with just Batman, so it has been nice and fun to see it with other characters.

Nightwing issue 90 starts out with a meeting between Blockbuster, Maroni, and Melinda Zucco, Dick Grayson’s half-sister and Mayor of Bludhaven. Blockbuster is very frustrated that no one has managed to kill Dick Grayson yet, so he has a plan to hire La Agente Fúnebre to not only take out Dick, but his entire apartment building as well. But little does Blockbuster know that Dick has someone on the inside (Melinda) to warn him. Thankfully, Dick is able to get everyone out of the building.

Meanwhile, Wally West’s wife, Linda Park sees the news on what happened to the building Dick Grayson lived in, so the Flash speeds to Bludhaven to search for his friend. What follows are some good conversations between the two friends and a plan to allow Dick some much-needed rest and downtime. Of course, Blockbuster has not given up. And he has another dastardly plan up his sleeve, one that includes a certain character that Dick Grayson’s friends and family have very good reason to be mad at. I know I’m excited to see how that showdown goes in the next issue!

Writer Tom Taylor continues to deliver in Nightwing issue 90. It reads like many threads of story are coming together without forgetting things that have happened before. Melinda is continuing to be featured and looking to be a valuable asset to her brother (both as Dick Grayson and as Nightwing). I also appreciated some small things, like when Nightwing got hit in the head with a rock when his apartment exploded. It’s definitely a call back to when Dick was shot in the head, but I also feel like it was probably a nod to how Grayson died in Taylor’s Injustice comic series.

In this issue, Geraldo Borges takes over for the art. His style fits the comic seamlessly with regular artist Bruno Redondo (who did the cover for this issue). Borges’ draws characters with plenty of emotion and movement which is always important for Nightwing. Adriano Lucas continues to be on colors for this issue along with Wes Abbott on letters which helps to tie everything together and keep the same overall feel for the comic. As a fun aside, the panel I’ve included here features Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, and Jessica Chen (editor for Nightwing.)

Nightwing issue 90 is a fun and exciting continuation of the “Get Grayson” storyline. I’m excited to see how Dick and Wally interact with a certain familiar villain who showed up at the end of this issue. Here’s hoping it is a cathartic experience for Dick Grayson and Dick Grayson fans alike!
