Star Trek Still Delivers at San Diego Comic-Con

WGA and SAG may be on strike (which we of course fully support! Everyone deserves a living wage!), resulting in a slightly more low-key San Diego Comic-Con, but that doesn’t mean that there can’t still be some reveals! Paramount+’s annual “Star Trek Universe” panel, which focuses on the streamer’s multiple Star Trek properties, brought announcements and sneak peeks to SDCC’s famed Hall H today.

This year’s panel focused on Discovery, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds. And with a Comic-Con absent its biggest Hollywood draws, the Star Trek Universe panel was almost normal. While the crowd wasn’t full to capacity, the way it normally would be in Hall H on Saturday, it will likely go down as the most well-attended panel of the weekend. And while fans may have been missing the celebrities, there was still plenty to celebrate.

One of the first drops was this exclusive, action-packed sneak peak from the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery, featuring Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Burnham and season 5’s newest cast members Callum Keith Rennie as Rayner, Elias Toufexis as L’ak and Eve Harlow as Moll. Discovery is one of the streamer’s longest-running properties and will ends its run in early 2024.

Paramount+ also dropped the official trailer for season 4 of the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as revealing some new promotional art with an homage to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The highly-anticipated season will premiere on September 7 with two episodes exclusively on Paramount+.

The last big announcement of the day was the news that Strange New Worlds, which is currently airing, would have the Star Trek franchise’s first ever musical episode. Episode 9, “Subspace Rhapsody”, will stream on August 3 and feature 10 original songs. A teaser trailer and poster for the episode were released and honestly, I am kind of ridiculously excited for this. I’ve fallen behind on Strange New Worlds, but I’m definitely going to make it a point to catch up in time for this episode!

It was also announced that the Strange New Worlds crossover episode with Lower Decks, which fans at the panel got to see early, will also drop early on the streaming service. In fact, the episode will go live today at 7 pm ET/4pm PT.

So there you have it! The cast may not have been there, but Paramount+ still made sure there was plenty of teasers to treat the fans.

In other Star Trek news, the sadly canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, or at least the second half of season 1, will land on Blu-ray and DVD on September 26. Episodes 11-20 are currently available on Digital.

Also, Star Trek: Lower Decks will have domestic and international fan screenings for this year’s Star Trek Day (September 8).
